Stranger with a fake profile added my daughter on FACEBOOK

I monitor my daughters Facebook friends so when a stranger tried to add her I did abut of checking.

The profile had no wall posts older than four days and the majority of the posts were along the lines of "do I know you?", even when they supposedly went to the same school.

In fact only two people appeared to know this person. Her best friend and her brother. Both these accounts also appeared to be only four days old.

The real clincher was when I used an image search engine to see if the profile pictures existed elsewhere on the Internet. The "girl" who tried to add my daughter? Her pictures belong to an American blogger. Her brothers pictures are some famous skateboarder, and the friend also has images harvested from the net.

I've reported the accounts to facebook (5 days ago) but the accounts are still visible, and have numerous teenage girls and boys as friends.

What else can be done?

What has your dd said about it? How old is she?

I agree with Pixie. Children should not use facebook.

This person added her, not the other was round.

My daughter is 14, and does check with me if someone she doesn't know tries to add her.

It's not my daughter I'm worried about as she has these people blocked. It's all the kids who have accepted the friend requests.

Hopefully you realise your dd has to be fourteen to be on Facebook?

Ds was saying yesterday that someone he didn't recognise tried to friend him. Apparently the profile pic was of a half dressed woman, so obv. aiming for the teenage boy market!

DS's method is not to accept anyone who doesn't have at least 10 mutual friends

MerlinsBeard · 09/04/2010 19:02

Is this for real or are you trying to get the MN opinion for an article?

2 posts so far and on this thread ....

Either way - i would assume that facebook has something in their terms and conditions or FAQ as to what happens next. Have you checked those?

Marne · 09/04/2010 19:07

I think maybe the OP was warning other parents of the danger of FB.

Luckily your dd has the sense to tell you.

Eurostar · 09/04/2010 19:08

Have you reported the page?

Have you got a link for the image search engine? I'm wondering how that works?

farmerjones · 09/04/2010 19:10

i was going to post, 'why are u surprised?' but instead, am intrigued. how do you do an image search?

BunnyHopper · 09/04/2010 19:12

No, this is for real.

When I get home I can post the links to the profiles with the sources for the original images.

These are my only posts as I've only just joined MN.

Facebook do have apolicy on this and the profiles have been reported, but nothing has happened. Who knows how many reports they have to look through.

OP posts:
BunnyHopper · 09/04/2010 19:13

I'll post details of the image search when I get home.

MerlinsBeard · 09/04/2010 19:15

Have you reported it to these people?

Facebook recommends it here

soapboxqueen · 09/04/2010 19:15

Report it here too. www.ceop.gov.uk

They've been trying to get facebook to add this link for ages.

BunnyHopper · 09/04/2010 20:50

I've looked at the ceop page but it was as clear as mud. Wasn't sure which category to report it under. The image search engine can be found at www.tineye.com/

You can upload an image or (as I did) give it a link to an online image. It will then let you know if it's seen the same image elsewhere on the net.

The fake Facebook profile is www.facebook.com/home.php#!/profile.php?id=100000963815030

The real Facebook profile for the person in the pictures is www.facebook.com/home.php#!/pages/Katie-Skadoske/80808643692?ref=ts

And the fact that her pictures are often used by fakes is discussed here bestuff.com/stuff/katie-babyfayceskadoske

And I obviously failed to do the links correctly.

Image search engine www.tineye.com/

Fake profile www.facebook.com/home.php#!/profile.php?id=100000963815030

Real person www.facebook.com/home.php#!/pages/Katie-Skadoske/80808643692?ref=ts

FB age is 13 not 14 btw.

TrillianAstra · 10/04/2010 00:03

Why did you capitalise FACEBOOK?

You can set privacy settings so that no-one can see your profile or see you on search - then your daughter can only add people who she knows.

Eurostar · 10/04/2010 00:03

Didn't know a site like tineye existed. Could come in useful. Thanks.

123simple · 20/07/2010 04:34

I have heard of something like this many times and it may be a cop.

Ive heard someone from my local police department that for their 'cyber investigation divisions' some police departments will have someone sweep pics off the net, pretend to go to the same school (sometimes church or other well known group/association in the area) to get on kids/teenagers friends lists on popular social networking sites like facebook and myspace.

Acekicker · 24/07/2010 17:56

Really 123simple? To what purpose? Where are you based? I'm struggling to imagine that UK police forces would do this kind of thing.

Are you suggesting that it's ok for people to add suspect/fake profiles as 'it may be a cop'?

A quick bit of research reveals pretty much a single reference for this type of activity.
