what is it you are doing?

EccentricaGallumbits · 08/04/2010 11:56

just horrible dissertation literature critique bollocks. but doing teenage pregnancy so participants are under 18 and very few papers say anything about using 'children' as participants.

i have taken this from my dissertation if it helps

"Before beginning my research project I ensured that my research would not cause any harm or suffering to any of the parties involved in the project and that permission was sought from the adults, the children and the parents of the children involved in the study. This is in line with the Nuremberg Code of 1949 as discussed by Greig and Taylor (1999) as I have ensured all participants? are voluntarily participating in the research and are able to withdraw at any time during the research process. "

Could also try the UNCRC for rights of the children, article 12 sets out that children havea right to be involved in research which concerns them

any help?

Check out the British Psychological Society's web pages, they've got loads on ethics, should have plenty or references there also on underage participants. Good luck with the write-up!

SuziKettles · 10/04/2010 10:57

Probably not what you want if you're writing up now, but we have this book in our library which I know some people starting research projects have found useful.

plimsolls · 10/04/2010 11:03

Eccentrica- I think I have a fair bit of information about this. Let me know if you need anything else in addition to whats above

MiaWallace · 10/04/2010 11:05

Have you looked at the bera guidelines?

They focus on educational research but most of the guidelines would be relevant to research with young participants

EccentricaGallumbits · 10/04/2010 11:05

thanks.
just needed a bit of an overview really. am way over my word count so need to just drop in a mention of specific considerations within the whole ethics bit. will yell if i get stuck again.
really appreciate it.

You'll need to give more than a cursory couple of paragraphs on ethics if your research involves young people. In terms of literature, you should probably look beyond guidelines and procedure. You'll find loads of useful articles in the journals childhood and children & society. I teach ethics in research with children and young people as part of my job. You can CAT me if you want specific help or advice.

beanlet · 02/05/2010 15:43

Your institution will have a research ethics board, and the main academic societies in your discipline should have ethics statements (mine does) -- you might try them.

I'm fairly sure that recent changes to legislation mean that researchers working with under 18s have to have CRB clearance (if you need it, your institution should pay for it).

peppapighastakenovermylife · 09/05/2010 21:08

Cat me if you like - I teach research and have a powerpoint on research ethics with children I can send you.
