Nappy Liners and Nappy Boosters????

Hi All

I'm completely new to the business of reusable nappies. Im a first time mum-to-be in May.I don't want to rush in and make an expensive mistake in buying a full nappy system. I have bought some eco disposables and thought initially I'd have one day on disposables and then one day on reuseables just to see how i get on. I have purchased 10 organic muslins and was thinking of combining this with the motherease airflow or rikki wrap? (small or extra small?)

I have also been thinking that I will need something else in the muslin nappy to make it more comfy/absorbent for my newborn but don't really know what would be best, please advise- what is the real difference between a liner and a booster
?
P.S not sure if this is relevant but I intend to bf

Thanks in advance

Liners are there to catch the poo and often keep the wet away from the babies skin. Paper or fleece and are not absorbent. Boosters are absorbent and absorb the wee.

Hi if just using a muslin id def use a booster for a bf baby, muslins should be fine for first few weeks when baby is small. You may need a wrap if using muslin though remember! A booster is to make the nappy more abosorbant and a liner is to 'catch' the poo to make it easier to dispose of (trying to make it sound as nice as i can lol) You dont always need a liner but id recommend one with a bf baby if poo is really explosive (trying not to put you off here first time mum).

Sometimes you may feel paper liners are a bit scratchy for a newborn so you may prefer a fleece liner to start with, plus they dont stick to bottom after poo like a paper one and they stay really dry. As for boosters cotton are quick to dry but bamboo a bit more absobant. Cotton should be fine for a new baby. I use a mixture of bumgenius boosters (i use their nappies) and little lamb cotton boosters. As for liners i got some cheap fleece ones off ebay, or you could make your own with a bit of fleece and cut to size.

Try babybots for boosters and ebay for liners. Good luck

Thanks for your replies peachybums and mnistooaddictive so if I've understood you correctly I could do with some of both to use at the same time one on top of the other-a liner to catch the poo and a booster to absorb more wee

For the first few days/weeks if breastfeeding, I really wouldn't use a liner - your baby will only poo smallish amounts of very runny poo, and a liner will be largely redundant, as the poo will be the consistency of runny mustard, and will just go through the liner with almost no 'solids'.You can also just chuck the whole lot in the machine, and let the machine do the work.
For the firs t few days of nappy changing I doubt you'd need a booster if you're using big muslins (70 or 80cm ones). If you've only got small ones (high street 50 or 60cm ones) then you will probably need a booster.

For instructions on how to fold your muslin, try the muslin fold here, which is good as you wrap the muslin round the legs and it stops squitty leaks out of the legs! You'll need a Nappi nippa to secure, and a wrap over the top would be useful to contain any escapages you might get from the nappy, I'd suggest a newborn Imse Soft wrap is a nice easy one to use with a deep adjustable velcro panel on the front so it'll fit most shapes of baby, or a Motherease Rikki wrap over the top

Hope that helps.

thanks for the clarification Ariela that was a lot of help. I Have 80 by 80 Green baby muslins so will give it a go without booster and take it from there
