Storage box for reusable wipes???

I am planning to give washable wipes a try but struggling to find a box to store them in to keep them moist - aside from the fancy plug-in electric wipe warmer thing, which makes me feel a bit and is also quite expensive... Any ideas?

I used washable wipes, but never used a box to keep them moist. I had a small plastic box upstairs and downstairs with clean, dry wipes and just dipped them in a bowl of water. Very very simple.

emsyj · 02/04/2010 23:19

I did wonder about doing that, but not sure I can manage the logistics of getting a bowl of water for each change whilst keeping eye/arm/whatever on the baby! Am clearly not ready for parenthood....

LOL!! I completely understand what you mean. I sometimes kept a water bottle next to the bowl for the days when I was particularly lazy tired. Maybe that would work for you??

i use a lock & lock box - couple of centimetres of water in the bottom, wipes on top, sorted

Didifrench · 03/04/2010 09:51

I use the disposable wipes box I had in my bounty pack. But I mostly let them dry. I used to have a bottle of wipes solution on the changing area.
You can also use a food storage box, as it has a cover.

purpleturtle · 03/04/2010 09:53

I used those boxes that Chinese takeaway comes in.

octothechildherder · 03/04/2010 11:07

You could use a sandwich box, a cheeky wipes kit, a monkey foot designs wet bag (dont fill with liquid though - better for transporting wet wipes when out)or anything really that is reusable is good.

AngelDog · 03/04/2010 11:39

I'm another lock & lock type food box user. At first we just used water with dry wipes, and had a bowl out for each nappy change. But it was a faff. Now I use a solution of cammomile tea with a couple of drops of lavender oil and a small slosh of olive oil, and make up a whole load of wipes at a time.

Washable wipes are so much better than cotton wool or bought wipes - they're so much more effective that even DH prefers them (and that's really saying something!)

confusedfirsttimemum · 03/04/2010 11:45

I use a bowl of water, but I don't change it every time. I get a clean bowl of water at the start of the day and then have a 'no double dip' rule - i.e. clean cloth goes into water, wipe, put in nappy bucket, new cloth. That way the water can last a couple of nappy changes and still be clean.

moaningminniewhingesagain · 03/04/2010 11:48

I use the plastic pampers wipes box to keep my washable wipes in, just with water added. I used to add lavender oil/baby wash/teatree oil but don't bother anymore.

When the box is knackered I used an old takeaway container/tupperware type thing.

Cies · 03/04/2010 11:56

I use a tupperware style box, and make up a load of solution every couple of days when I wash the nappies. My favourite solution is cammomile tea, with olive oil or almond oil plus a couple of drops of lavender essential oil. I store the wipes in the solution.

peachybums · 03/04/2010 13:22

We have cheeky wipes with two containers that lock at two sides, one for clean one for dirty with a couple of cm of water in each with some essential oil. The boxes are like tupperware or lunch boxes so im guessing they could be just as good. Again we have cheeky wipes bag for when we go out but a mesh bag inside a cosmetic drawstring bag would work just as well.

littler1 · 03/04/2010 17:27

i also use chinese takeaway tub, i make up a solution in empty washing up bottle.

Water/ small amount of baby wash/ few dops baby oil/ 2 drops teatree oil. put about 10 wipes in at a time with a good squirt and change when empty. easy.

4andnotout · 03/04/2010 17:31

I use a small monkey foot wetbag for my wet wipes both for home and away.

tootootired · 03/04/2010 17:42

Sorry but does nobody live in a house with running water? I used to have a stack of dry flannels, when it was changing time I would run a flannel under the nearest tap and wring out, at the same time as going to fetch a nappy. Then approach baby with dry nappy and wet wipe in hand, preparing for the worst.

If out and about, 90% of the time the changing area is in a toilet with a sink.

confusedfirsttimemum · 03/04/2010 19:20

Don't assume everyone's house is like yours Tootoo. Nearest sink is a flight of stairs away from DD's room (tiny two bedder, not huge mansion) and her room is the only place with room for the changing mat. I'm already up and down the stairs to wash my hands afterward, and that's bad enough. It isn't always handy to run a flannel under the 'nearest' tap.

Also, lucky you if you always knew in advance that one wet flannel would do the job!

tootootired · 03/04/2010 20:15

I live in a three bedroom semi, sorry, but yes, I do have an upstairs bathroom and downstairs kitchen. I just felt people were making a lot of hard work with basins of water but can see if you have stairs involved it might not be possible. I did eventually develop a one flannel method but won't bore you with it - heck we are meant to be on the same side

confusedfirsttimemum · 04/04/2010 07:54

Oh, the one flannel comment was meant as a joke! Do share if you know how to do it. DD is more of a "six wipes and exploding poo" sort of girl!

emsyj · 04/04/2010 12:33

The Cheeky Wipes kit looks good, but I've already bought the wipes themselves - might just get one anyway tho as can obviously never have too many wipes! I'm looking forward to the power poos already....

OP posts:
becksydee · 04/04/2010 12:57

i bought the cheeky wipes kit initially, the bits i've ended up using are:

clean wipes box (which is just a branded lock & lock box)
clean wipes essential oil blend (not really necessary but smells lovely)
clean wipes wet bag (for trips out)
mucky wipes essential oil blend (goes in nappy bucket to keep it smelling fresh)

i don't really rate the wipes themselves as they're cotton & i live in a hard water area so they don't stay very soft - bamboo wipes are much better IMO.

the mucky wipes box i'm now using to keep my breast pump in! so the mesh for the box is now completely redundant.

the mucky wipes wet bag is really well designed & would be useful if you're just using reusable wipes & not nappies as well - because i use both, when i go out the dirty wipes go into a larger wet bag with the nappy.

whether or not the whole kit is useful depends on whether you're just using washable wipes or nappies as well i think. i believe you can buy the individual bits of the kit from cheeky wipes directly so that might be worth looking at

tootootired · 04/04/2010 15:10

One flannel method - you need a big normal face flannel not a piddly little wipe.

1.Open out damp flannel over your whole hand, wipe around whole area mopping up the worst of all poo.

  1. Fold flannel in half dirty side to inside and use the back to get any bits you've missed
  1. fold flannel again (now in quarters with all dirt on inside) and use the last surfaces to "polish off"

Must be possible to do it onehanded as I had to hold DC's ankles in Grip of Death to stop them wriggling away. But 18mths since potty training now so a distant memory...

boogeek · 04/04/2010 15:16

I just use a tupperware box, it's a little more robust than the chinese takeaway type but about the same size.

peachybums · 04/04/2010 16:07

Haha one wipe method, i used a similar thing. Could always tell when DP had changed DD when id popped to shop or through night cos there was a mountain of wipes to be washed, why cant he use one???? Grr lol.

I use washable nappies and cheeky wipes, i find the little mucky bag comes in handy with the net inside as i can wash wipes in the net so they dont get stuck in door of washer. I dont use their wipes blends though cos they are really expensive, i just bought a big bottle of tea tree oil and a bottle of lemon grass oil, much cheaper.

I could use just water as i live in a bungalow so bathroom not far away, Sometimes if before a bath or something iu just use a wet flannel but sometimes its nice to have something that smells nice isnt it?

emsyj · 04/04/2010 21:22

I'll be using washable nappies too - so I've got the bucket and mesh liners for that and will chuck the wipes in with the dirty nappies. Also got the waterproof bag for dirty nappies when out & about so that will do for any wipes as well (altho may be lazy and use disposable wipes in the changing bag... Have got some of the fancy ones that came as part of my washable nappy accessory kit so will sling that pack in there for starters and see how it goes).

So looks like I just need a sort of plastic lunch box and possibly also a spray bottle and see which is better for me...

At home the bathroom is near dd's bedroom, so I just use a bowl of water and put some of this foam wash from boots on the wipes. When out, it's rare not to have water in the changing room and i just wet the wipe and squirt some wash on. If I'm going somewhere with no possible water, I put some wash in a bottle with water.
