he is dry around 3-4 times out of every full 7 day week so around half the week.

Have run out tonight and local Boots this evening had also ran out of 4-7 yr Boy Huggies PJ Pants - always this age group!!!!

Anyway go without tonight. Made sure he had 2 wees before bedtime and limited drink

If he is dry in morning do I continue or go buy some????

Get him up and take him to the loo now, then come back to MN. You don't need to wake him, just sit him on the loo so that he empties out, and he will probably last until morning.

If you're willing to lift him when you go to bed, and are willing to risk wet beds, then go ahead nappy-free.

Tip: make the bed up with waterproof sheet, fitted sheet, waterproof sheet, fitted sheet. That way if he wets you just have to strip, not remake the bed.

brogan2 · 31/03/2010 22:52

Well you could always buy some just in case he wakes wet, gets distressed and is nervous to go back to sleep in pants.

He may be fine but he may just not be ready. Still reasonably common at his age especially with boys.

superme · 31/03/2010 22:54

he wakes aroudn every other night so Im loathed to start the lifting thing...I think this would disturb him and I'd end up in bed with him trying to get him off to sleep

I may chance it - I have put a waterproof sheet underneath but havent doubled up as dont have another but good idea

Chum of mine has little boy who was 7 before he was dry at night, he was a heavy sleeper and liked to drink a lot - not a great combination! But eventually grew out of it.

superme · 31/03/2010 22:57

ummm I think I will buy some more tom as he did say I think I need one on tonight but I said it was fine, just for him to try but wasnt a problem if he had a little accident - tried not to make too much of it.

But then I thought - when do I let him go without how long do yo ave to wait till he's dry every morning for 2-3 weeks?????

Well, my DS1 was never dry at night, not once and one night when he was 5 we forgot to put a nappy on him. We were amazed to find he was dry in the morning. Turns out he had been using the nappy in the morning instead of going to the loo. Not deliberately, more habit.

Having had one success we decided to do it on purpose the next night and he was dry again except he didn't quite make the toilet when he got up in the morning. That was the only accident he ever had. He never wet the bed after that and never wore a nappy again.

If we had waited for him to be dry all the time he would probably still be in nappies and he is 9! I think sometimes you just have to go with it and take a chance. I wouldn't buy any more nappies and see how it goes. You never know, he might never need them. If, after a week, you are getting more wet than dry nights, get another packet and don't try again for another few months. They are ready when they are ready and there isn't much anybody can do to force it. It's hormonal.

Good luck.

Get one of these asap. It makes clearing up after an accident really easy as the mattress is usually dry. My DD (6yo) still has one on her bed because of very occassional accidents.

Every child is different, for a bazillion different reasons too, but read a link on here a while ago that seemed to make a huge difference to my DS. It was a link to some kind of national (UK) bedwetting site and I changed 3 things that I was doing and he is now dry (aged 5.3).

I stopped reducing fluid intake, switched off nitelites and stopped getting him up for a wee before I went to bed. The nitelites apparently can reduce production of the necessary hormone and reducing fluid intake/asking them to wee when bladder isn't full can actually prevent them from recognising when their bladder is full, thus reducing chances of them waking.

I always stuck with something I also read on here, just to put them in bed with pj bottoms, never pants underneath.

Now I have typed this I know he is going to empty his bladder all over his mattress tonight but it all worked with perseverance and a lot of washing - now none.

Whatever you do, good luck . I always think everything I do is the wrong thing until something works

My DS is just 8 and has only been dry at night for 6 months. He just didnt have a mature enough bladder/sensory development. Talked to school nurse about it, she was VERY helpful. Can recommend you talk to HV/nurse, as they have huge amounts of stuff to help you. Lifting at night is no use as it doesnt train the body.

This is really really common in boys...ever wondered why Huggies, etc bother to make pullups that go to age 11? They wouldnt bother if it was a tiny % of the population!!

Good luck

I have a nearly 5 yr-old that isn't even dry every day never mind night. She also has a nightlight - will be quicker to turn that down in future.

piprabbit - the beauty of that mat is that you can easily take it to someone's house to use if she's there overnight - something I have wondered about.

TracyK · 01/04/2010 18:57

Does the waterproof mat 'rustle'? I got the pampers mats and they rustle like buggery!

My ds has just turned 6 and I think sometimes he does stay dry and pee as he wakes rather than get up and go to the loo. But some mornings - theres loads of pee in the pull up - I'm sure more than 1 pee's worth.

He is an incredibly deep sleeper and I'm loathe to disrupt that!

piprabbit · 01/04/2010 19:15

The mat from Jojo maman bebe doesn't rustle, and doesn't seem to make the children too hot either. It's like towelling on the upper side with a heavy duty Nylon fabric backing. Plus wings that tuck under the mattress to stop it shifting around.

It is very discrete once it's under the sheet, so definitely good for sleepovers.

piprabbit · 01/04/2010 19:26

P.S. also stays in place well if you don't use the wings e.g using it on a double bed. I know becuase I 'borrowed' DDs for the last few weeks of my pregnancy when I was worrying about waters breaking...

superme · 01/04/2010 22:21

Hi all well last night went well - all dry this morning. Yes this is the mat I have not a JoJo one but one very similar.

I have read to give lots of drink during the day but have a cut off a few hours before bed.

I havent bought anymore pull ups and have decided not too unless things take a real nosedive
