A friend is going to be godmother to a 1 year old and a 5 year old - both are boys. She wants to buy lasting gifts for the children. I have no idea what to suggest.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

If she is a god mother then I would suggest a lovely Bible if she is religious or a bottle of port to lay down if not.

I bought a Mulberry tree for a boy but I do know that his parents are planning on staying in their house forever.
A nice art print.
Bible.
Booze.
Premium Bonds.

DP was Godfather a few weeks ago and we bought a personalised candle with name, church, date of christening etc. on. The parents were over the moon with it and it really looked lovely.

It was bought from Ebay, if you search for 'personalised christening candle' there are allsorts of different ones come up.

Personalised art?

one of our best pressies was mounted coins from the royal mint for 2008 when ds was born. they fdo loads of really elegant things, looks better than it sounds.

SummerToad · 12/04/2010 21:38

a little ornamental cherry tree, small enough to live in a pot. it flowers at the time of year that she was born

wishingchair · 13/04/2010 14:52

Apple tree - some can live in pots.

notonthehighstreet.com has lots of lovely personalised things.

BikeRunSki · 13/04/2010 15:02

My favorite of DS's presents was a wooden stool with his name and date of birth carved on. Ours was made locally, but there is something similar here (we don;t have any cartoons, just carved writing).

CantSleepWontSleep · 13/04/2010 15:29

Definitely not a money box - dd got 6 .

These are lovely and personal.

Or a bible as others have said.

SoLongAsItsHealthy · 13/04/2010 20:37

I got the entire collection of Beatrix Potter stories in a presentation box for my god-daughter. About £80 on Amazon or you can get two half boxes for about £40 I guess). I often buy special books for other babies. Things like Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, Wind in the Willows etc

CantSleepWontSleep · 13/04/2010 21:07

Yes we spent a fortune on those for someone SoLong, and then discovered that you can often get the whole set for a tenner from the book clubs.

How about a silver candle holder to go on their christening cake (and subsequent birthday cake)

here

MrsJohnDeere · 13/04/2010 21:28

Dictionary - we give the huge 2 volume OED.

Takver · 13/04/2010 21:31

A silver weaning spoon, or a really nice set of childs cutlery for when they are a little older

seimum · 13/04/2010 21:35

My godson got the complete set of Thomas the tank engine stories (the original ones, not the simplified ones based on the TV series).

If you're giving bibles, make it a proper one - they grow out of the 'toddler'/children's bibles very quickly.

UniS · 13/04/2010 22:54

Cutlery with their name engraved on it.
