Hunting the perfect nappy

I wonder if any of you lovely ladies on here have any suggestions for some new reuseables for my DD. We used to use itti bittis but had lots of problems with leakage around the legs...

DD is 11 months and reasonably big. Haven't had her weighed for a few months, but just looked and if she's still tracking her centile she's about 9.5 kg. Normal 'chubby' baby legs and a pot belly, fairly small hips.

I'm looking for something that's in one part once assembled (i.e. no separate wraps) otherwise DH and childcare won't really use them. Not to bulky, not too complicated to assemble. Needs to dry easily too.

Any ideas?

Bum genius all in one are good - especially once a baby is a bit bigger. Although they can be a bit expensive - you can get pretty cheap bundles off ebay and our have been washed hundreds of times and are still as good as new.

cheeksandcherries · 27/03/2010 18:28

Bumgenius or Fuzzi Bunz are bankers... with the FB onesize, you can customise the size of the leg hole (button and elastic arrangement like maternity clothes), which might be something to investigate if leg leakage was a problem with Ittis...

I do like the look of those ones. You rate the one size ones? I've always been a bit sceptical that they could give a good fit without being super bulky.

Is velcro a problem on the BumGenius - I can imagine DD being a bit of a devil for ripping the velcro open once she works it out...

I think if your DD is 11 months, they will be fine. OS tend to look a bit too bulky in the early days, but should easily be fine by 11 months.

Ha ha... yes, velcro does become a problem later on, but you can get round it by always putting clothes over the top straight away. It's not a total deal-breaker, I don't think, but snaps are better for a) not getting ripped open by toddlers b) lasting longer - as in for subsequent babies too c) not collecting fluff, going hard or wrinkling up over time.

Velcro prob better for childcare though...

NappyShedSal · 27/03/2010 23:13

If leakage at the legs has been an issue then I would really recommend a nappy with a leg gusset - neither BG or FB have leg gussets. Nor do Tots Bots easifits or pockets. The 2 main AllinOnes that have leg gussets are Pop-ins by Close parent and Popn'Gro by Lollipop. Out of the 2 I much prefer the Pop'n'Gro.

Octothebaglady · 28/03/2010 11:15

I would recommend fuzzi bunz or bumgenius too.

nappyzoneloveslindor · 28/03/2010 20:31

here here bumgenius recommendation here too but the v3 pocket as onesize and you can stuff it some more if a heavy wetter. I have never tried theonesize fuzzi to comment but love the perfect fit. I found velocro only a problem dependant on the "handle size" for example your toddler can get a quick easy grip on say a happy heiny fastener where as the bumgenius tabs are smaller and harder to grab - that said a determined one will manage most!. I found the fit of happy heiny better on mine but had more fights with them

confusedfirsttimemum · 29/03/2010 08:24

Thanks guys. The leaking with the itti bittis seems to be with the moisture wicking (is that the spelling) straight through the cover rather than necessarily actually 'out' the leg gap, if that makes sense.

I think I need to order a couple and try them out. Thanks for the recommendations.

Just one more quick question. Is it really true that you can replace the elastic in a fuzzi bunz easily? I'm a bit useless with that type of thing, can just about do a button but hems tend to go all wrong...

Babybots · 29/03/2010 08:33

Im another fun of the Fuzzi one sie!

Great lasting nappy and you really can achieve a great fit regardless of size and shape of baby.

The elastic can be replaced by threading through the existing holes so no sweing involved! And they come with an extra set, Bargin!

Bumgs are a good nappy but the velcro on mine looks tatty after 16 months. No way mine would do more than one child.

Good Luck.

nappyzoneloveslindor · 29/03/2010 16:05

i have never changed elastic as i am a no hoper when it comes to sewing! I agree the bg dont age as well as others asthetically so to speak though my later ones fared alot better than the earlier versions. Greenkids onesize and my ittis still looked as good as new and my fuzzis the day they were packed away.

duvetheaven · 29/03/2010 22:41

Find Wonderoos to be good on my DD who high up centile chart. I didn't find BG a good fit on DD's chubby legs.

peachybums · 30/03/2010 14:59

I use bumgenius on DD shes almost 3, she has small hips and big pot belly too. Never had a leak, we did try FB but they leaked, i dont know if it was that i got the elastic wrong round the leg though, il have to try these again. But BG are a winner for us!

ellielou02 · 30/03/2010 15:03

Another vote for bumgenius here also loving blueberry one size just now.

littler1 · 03/04/2010 17:38

The wicking most likely occured due to poppered vest being too tight or tight jeans, i would advise you use either next size up vests or vest extenders and avoid jeans with a low rise if possible.

Coolababies are quite good if you want a cheap poppered nappy to try i think babybots do them but you can get them in bulk cheaper on ebay if you find you like them.

Ariela · 03/04/2010 21:04

COnfused, do you put vests on your DD? If so, it's possible they're sneaking in at the edge of the Itti Bittis, caausing the 'leak' Would suggest some vestextendersmight be worth trying to cure the problem before having to invest in new nappies?

confusedfirsttimemum · 05/04/2010 12:04

I have investigated the possibility of it being vests, and the leaks do seem better with looser vests/just a t-shirt, but there is definitely still an issue. Even when DD was wearing a t-shirt and some loose jogging bottoms there was damp round the tops of her legs, it just wasn't so visible on the clothes IYSWIM. It's a shame, I do love ittis. I'm wondering whether she's just 'between sizes' on the waistband and they'll get better again when she's a bit bigger.

Another vote for bumgenius here - I've tried them all and they are in my top 3. Having read your request I think the bumgenius one size (velcro) or the bumgenius one size organic (popper fastening) would be brilliant - although organic takes a little longer to dry.

The bg all in one is brilliant although you have to buy s m + l sizes and can cost more...

littler1 · 10/04/2010 22:49

Another quick suggestion, have you tried weenotions AI2, i have never had a leak with these. Fairly expensive but you can buy extra inserts and reuse the covers if not soiled. Also they age extremely well and have great resale value. Best to try cloth nappy tree if you want to get a preloved one to try.

confusedfirsttimemum · 20/04/2010 12:44

Right, I have a couple of follow up questions for you lovely ladies.

First, anyone know anywhere that has the itti mini booster in stock anywhere? I want to try and get some more use out of the ittis, but nowhere has them. Nowhere! (ps Anyone know why lots of places discounting the all in one. Is it not selling or being discontinued or something?).

Secondly, please help me work out my Fuzzi Bunz one size. I am doing something wrong, wrong, wrong. It all seems to bunch up round the waist and I can't work out where the three poppers go. It's a triangle of poppers, right, but if the top popper is on the inermost snap, the bottom popper doesn't reach anywhere near the middle snap. It's about two out. When does the inner one yet used. Am most confused (have figured out elastic though. Yeay!).

Bumgenius on order...

OP posts:
cheeksandcherries · 20/04/2010 18:36

Hi confused!

Itti mini boosters are out of stock almost everywhere due to some form of distribution issue. It's unclear exactly what. They will eventually arrive, though, I'm sure.

The Itti AIO is being discounted mainly due to the distributor deciding they weren't selling fast enough, and lowering their own price - so everyone else had to follow suit. They are currently trying to decide whether or not to continue bringing them in to the UK. Great shame, as we have stacks of customers who love them...

Trying to work out what you mean with the FB os.. which one do you think is the innermost snap? There are 8 snaps along the top, so the innermost snap for one side is the snap 4 in (have i lost you?!)

sounds like you're doing well though... well done!

confusedfirsttimemum · 21/04/2010 13:29

Hhm, I can kind of see the problem with the AIO. If you're going for an all in one, they're possibly seen as a bit fiddly. The main reason people seem to like ittis is because the shell can dry so much faster than the outside, which obviously doesn't help if they are all sewn in...

On the FBs, there are 8 snaps across the top, four each side. So if I attach the top snaps four in on each side, where are the bottom ones meant to line up? There are 8 snaps along the bottom too, but the bottom snap doesn't want to line up four in on each side. Does that make sense?

OP posts:
cheeksandcherries · 21/04/2010 16:52

Yes.. that's kind of true. Although, most people do find that because they're made of microfibre, rather than bamboo, the drying time is actually comparable to, if not faster than the tri-fold booster in the SIO.

On the FBs - think is meant to work best aesthetically by attaching each snap on the top row four in, and the corresponding snap on the bottom row is only 3 in.

I guess the issue comes when you want to put the bottom row of snaps 4 in - then you will get some bunching on the 'wing' when you fasten them on the 4th snap in on the top row. I guess, though, you aren't only reliant on the snaps to adjust the leg size, (as you are with most nappies) - you can use the elastic to do this too.
It does beg the question what the 4th snap in on the bottom row is really for though, doesn't it?! I'd be interested to know how other people use it... I started using this nappy when DS was 6 mths, so never had to use it on the teeniest setting

confusedfirsttimemum · 21/04/2010 17:29

Ok, that makes sense. Thanks! I thought I must be getting something wrong with the 4/3 arrangment because, as you say, what on earth is the fourth snap on the bottom line for in that case?

Thank you!
