When did you put your baby in 'proper' clothes?

My DD is 11 weeks, and most days (6 out of 7, normally) she's still in a vest and sleep suit all day.

On the days that I get her dressed (normally if we go out to visit someone) she seems uncomfortable laying on buckles, seams etc.

At what age did you put your baby into proper clothes throughout the day? I know it's good to do to establish a nighttime routine, although my DD goes into her sleeping bag at night, so there is at least that which sets day apart from night. And she sleeps pretty well at night.

So how important is it? Whenever we're out and about with the sling or pushchair I feel a bit guilty that she's not properly dressed - just a jacket over her PJs. I don't want people to think I don't look after her properly!

those dungarees wih feet are fab, ds wears them a lot, sometimes even to bed

trellism · 28/03/2010 14:56

I put dd (21 weeks) in frocks for family dinners and the like. I tend to get quite annoyed when I do, because her gps carry her around with the skirt rucked up around her shoulders. Sometimes dresses can get in the way if you're breastfeeding too - when she was smaller she had a denim pinafore that had to be constantly rearranged so she could feed.

Mostly she is in babygros. I can't see the point of her wearing "human" clothes until she's older.

MrsBadger · 28/03/2010 15:03

the most useful baby dresses I had for dd poppered underneath like a vest so didn't ride up

v hard to find though - Gap winter range was the best

Kept them all in babygros as long as poss.

DS3 has just started wearing proper clothes and he is 15m. He is quite small though and is still in 9-12, 6-9 in some brands.

I don't tend to bother with seperates until they can walk as trousers end up being crawled out of IMO. He has only been walking 2/3 months, lazy little dot.

memoo · 28/03/2010 15:07

DD is 6 months and still spends most of her time in babygro's

If we were going to visit family or something I do get her 'dressed' but tends to be leggings and a long top rather than dresses, I feel she is more comfy like that

Psammead · 28/03/2010 20:23

Thanks for all the replies! Seems to just be a matter of personal choice, then.

She's in dungarees today because we were visiting, but I'll be keeping her in her babygros otherwise

Personally I wished I'd returned all the lovely outfits in size 0-3 that were bought as presents, & in hindsight I'd have probably returned 50% of the next size too. They're so much more comfy in the sleepsuit/babygro all-in-ones aren't they. Plus she always went mental when things were put on over her head, and doing it seemed so cruel when she was tiny.

I am on my 4th baby and the move to 'proper' clothes has got longer and longer. My 6mo baby has bags and bags of clothes sitting there waiting to be sorted out and worn, but its babygrows all the way!! I think when its warmer or when she starts walking or crawling then i might make the move, but she's happy and snug.

monsterkeeper · 30/03/2010 16:14

:D stinkypinky they do them in Primark!Adult sized babygro's!madness.

bell77 · 30/03/2010 16:20

My son is 9 weeks old and he is constantly in babygro's. He always looks so comfortable, and people always comment on how nice it is to see him without 'proper clothes' on. I think too many people try and make their children grow up too quickly. Each to their own, but in my view you have years to put your children in proper clothes!

Bonsoir · 30/03/2010 16:23

I never kept DD in a babygro in the daytime. Far too fiddly. I had some white velour legging things, with feet, that I put her in, with a proper smock top and a little cardigan or jumper. Or else some cord dungarees.

As I have just bought dd (14 yrs) a full sized pink fleece baby grow from Primark, I'm not sure what the answer is

EightiesChick · 30/03/2010 16:40

I also kept DS in babygros for as long as possible - in fact he has only recently given them up and is 14 months. He wore them to nursery every day - much easier for me to put him in those than sort out a whole matching outfit with lots of bits, and also more practical given that he was crawling around the whole day. I never saw them give him any trouble with crawling. We would put him in proper clothes on some weekend days, but not always.

TBH I have only now changed to putting him in clothes in response to sggestions by the nursery that he would benefit from being in clothes now that he's in a toddler room, as he will notice that he looks 'different' to the others if not, and that it might help him get walking to not be in the babygros (he is almost walking but just not quite there). I am not entirely sure about this - they promised me some articles on the subject but I haven't got them yet - but have gone with it for the moment.

OP, I would certianly keep your DD in babygros for now if she seems happier. You can always get actual pjyamas for night time if you want to make the distinction. Sleepsuit is a misleading term - I always just referred to them as 'suits'.

DitaVonCheese · 02/04/2010 23:47

Six months and only really then because all the other babies were in proper clothes by then. DD hated being dressed and undressed when she was little and looked horribly uncomfortable in "proper" clothes. Plus I love a baby in a babygro

Even now, at 18 months, her "proper" clothes are almost invariably stretchy jersey top and stretchy jersey trousers.

Debs75 · 02/04/2010 23:59

I had a supply of stretch babygros up until they stopped fitting so usually 2-3 years. They are great for not going anywhere days and if dc's are poorly.
However all had some 'outfits' from birth, soft stuff that was easily undone and was nice for visiting. I got the looks as well. In summer it was nicer and cooler for dd to be in a cotton dress but in winter a vest babygro and cardi kept her warm.
They didn't hinder the elder two with crawling and walking as we had carpets but with dc3 she does slip sometimes on the laminate

amberflower · 04/04/2010 14:16

I have to confess I put both of mine into clothes during the day and babygros at night quite early, probably from about 3-4 weeks. However the daytime clothes are always dungarees, or soft trousers and top etc. No 'mini older children' clothes - hate seeing tiny babes in jeans and trendy tops and mini shoes! DS2 (5 months) looks so cute in his dungarees and they are perfect daywear IMO, very soft and comfy. For naps, I just take off the dungarees and put him into his sleeping bag in the long-sleeved top and socks, so no belts/buckles etc to get in the way.

Mind you there is a specific incentive to get DS2 dressed in the mornings - it encourages DS1 (5 years) to get into his school uniform quickly so they have a 'race' to see who can get dressed quickest!

For bedtime it's always a babygro (some of my friends had their DC's in proper pjyamas by 6 months ) and preferably white towelling babygros - soooo cute

Rebecca41 · 04/04/2010 19:40

I waited till my DC started crawling, because crawling in a babygro is difficult - the legs of the babygro get left behind!

I used to change their babygros morning and evening.

pointydog · 04/04/2010 19:44

cyb, I think they are called one-sies, no? My 20 yr old nephew had one
