I can't get DS, who's 3 to take his first dose of antibiotics for an ear infection. It's amoxycillin, which he was ok with a year ago. I've tried bribes of ALL KINDS - even sweets, tv, cake as well as books, favourite games etc. I've explained that it will make him feel better. I've threatened he will feel worse without it. advice appreciated very much

Bumping up and watching. I have the same problem!

Just squirt it in with a syringe & hold his mouth shut.

agree with anonandlikeit, the syringe works wonders. I get my DS2 (he is 3) to help me push the plunger and turn it into a game...

squirt the medicine inside his mouth at an angle aiming for the middle of his cheek on the inside if that makes sense!Apparently this tiggers the swallowing reflex - a nurse at A&E got DS2 to take his medicine this way - I was gobsmacked as it used to be a nightmare to get any kind of medicine into him. HTH

Yes, generally you have to use a bit of force if they wont take important meds. I used to be all bribey/nice about it with my DS until he developed an infection, needed to take antibiotic, which tasted yuk and i realised i HAD to get him to take it. If his infection had got worse he would probably have ended up in hospital with antibiotics on a drip, so i decided 'he is taking it' and pretty much forced him. It only took once with force, i.e if he spit it out i told him he would have to take another spoonful. He was v upset & it was not nice but alternative would have been worse, and after the first time he accepted it (with treat after also just to help it go down). DS was 4 at time

Someone on another thread I read recently suggested a choc button before as it takes away the taste. Haven't tried it yet myself but give it a go!

I have the answer (well, it worked for me!) Fill the syringe with the antibiotic then smear chocolate spread onto the syringe. They have to suck hard to get the choc spread off the syringe so they suck in the AB at the same time

The method we use with our DD (21 months, so a little younger) is emotional blackmail (yes, great parents aren't we!); if she doesn't take it we pretend to cry and say such things as "mummy and daddy are so saaaad that Holly won't taker her medicine" sniff sniff "I wiiish Holly would take it so she could feel better" etc etc. She then happily takes it and even gives us a little hair stroke each to make us feel better

My DD was awful until we gave some to DS then she wanted a piece of the action and contantly asks for medicine now like it's a treat. Is there anone else in the house that can 'take it' and talk about how lovely it is?

Love the choc spread idea!
