Fuck fuck fuck, was putting DS2 in bed and didn't realise DS1 had gotten hold of some loose staples. He had some in his mouth and I managed to fish 4 or 5 out. I opened his mouth one more time to check if there is any more left and saw a glint of one in the back of his throat. Before I could get to it, he had swallowed it. ARGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH! Have called NHS Direct and they have said they will call back in half an hour but in the meantime to keep him up (it's his bedtime now!!!!). Argh, what do I do? It's one of those unused ones with horrible sharp pointy ends... Any one's little ones have done that and been okay? Can't even take him to A&E as DH is not home...

Oh I don't know, bumping for you!

Ewe · 24/03/2010 19:13

From a size perspective they should pass, it's the sharp edges which might be concerning, NHS Direct?

notevenamousie · 24/03/2010 19:13

I'd take them both to A+E. Tired stressed children are better than some sort of perforation.

Oh crap.
I reckon you might be off to A&E

confusious · 24/03/2010 19:14

I think you need to take him to A&E.
If only to put your own mind at ease.

FabIsGettingThere · 24/03/2010 19:14

I would go to hospital tbh. The staples are sharp and can tear the stomach lining.

thisisyesterday · 24/03/2010 19:15

i would definitely take to a&e.

morningpaper · 24/03/2010 19:16

A&E lady

good luck!

madwomanintheattic · 24/03/2010 19:18

oh bless, wait until they call. i think they would be worried about it catching somewhere and not making it's way 'out', rather than it causing a significant amount of damage?

they might well want to x-ray... not sure how old he is? sometimes with slightly bigger kids they do choose to wait it out (with you scraping through everything they produce to make sure it passes)... staples might be deemed too sharp to leave though - don't know what the guideline is!

you've done the right thing though - hope they call you back soon x

MakemineaGandT · 24/03/2010 19:20

I would go to a&e - don't wait for them to call back

brimfull · 24/03/2010 19:20

Most things pass with no problem but as it is a sharp object I expect he may have to go and have an xray.
My instant thought was to get him to swallow something like banana or bread to connect with the sharp staple and prevent it casuing dmaag but I think you should wait for nhs direct to give advice.

brimfull · 24/03/2010 19:21

I am presuming he is fine and not choking or spluttering though.

angel1976 · 24/03/2010 19:35

I'm sitting here in tears... DS1 asked to go to bed and I've given him a bottle and put him to bed. I can't go to the A&E until DH comes back. DS2 is recovering from a nasty virus and it's the first night he has gone to bed without coughing and spluttering. I'm going in to check on DS1 every half hour tonight and wait for NHS Direct advice... Spoke to a friend who used to be a paediatric nurse and she said it's a tricky one. They are unlikely to make him vomit unless he has swallowed poisonous substances.

brimfull · 24/03/2010 19:37

Don't worry he will be fine .
they will ring soon

MakemineaGandT · 24/03/2010 19:38

call nhs direct again

FabIsGettingThere · 24/03/2010 19:39

Surely vomitting will make it likely he will cause damage with the sharp bits? Poor lamb.

Northernlurker · 24/03/2010 19:39

Do you have a car? I think you need to take them both with you to A&E

What happened in the end pixie

confusious · 24/03/2010 19:43

Could you ring dh and get someone to sit with ds2.
If you don't go all you are going to do is panic all night.

you really do need to take him to a&e. do you have no other friends/family who could sit with your other child?

if not take them both. this is serious! a staple could tear or puncture anything inside him... please take him

winnybella · 24/03/2010 19:44

A&E, I think.

ilovesprouts · 24/03/2010 19:47

bump

SusieCarmichael · 24/03/2010 19:50

going by what pixie said, it sounds serious have they rang back yet?
