Any good baby shampoo suggestions please

Can anyone suggest a good baby shampoo please?

My DS is 3 months and ive noticed that over the past 2 wks hes got a patch of dry skin on his scalp. The HV suggested today leaving in olive oil overnight then rub gently in the morning with a soft baby brush. She said its not cradle cap though, just dry flaky skin. Ive been tempted to pick but i know it can cause more problems.

When i told her i used Johnsons baby shampoo she said she wouldnt recommened it as it can make dry skin worse. It came in a set we had so just use it coz its there.

Any other options would be grateful thanks x

Halo 'n' Horns is a range of skin friendly baby products, including shampoo. They apparently contain no nasties. They sell them in Asda (amongst other places I assume). It's supposed to be very good for sensitive skin. They smell nice too. I use them and have had no probs.

We use dentinox cradle cap shampoo. It cleared up my ds's cradle cap and we just kept using it as he is prone to dry skin ( he is 19 months).

I use Miamoo on DS (9mo). It's about £7 and you can get it from waitrose. It smells gorgeous and lasts for ages. No problems with a dry scalp, it's also free from parabens and sls.

Here in Spain the recommendation now is not to use anything other than natural oils (almond oil is the one I usually hear) until at least six months. THey're not dirty, are they?
I did this and never had any problems..

TheMumtalist · 23/03/2010 20:35

My DS is 19mths and I have never used any shampoo on his hair, I only sponge it with a little water and his hair is in beautiful condition.

Im also a fan of almond oil.

Johnson products are awful , the smell nice but they are purely chemicals.

sparkleshine · 23/03/2010 21:17

Hes got a lot of hair and it looks a mess if not washed for 2 days, so just water isnt enough.
Ive read that Johnsons contain more chemicals than they should, although they do smell lovely, so we are using up the baby softwash first before buying some more better natural products. Their baby oil seemed to dry his skin out, so we r using olive oil for that.
I will try dentanox shampoo tomorrow and see how he goes.
Will take a look at that website as well
Dont have a waitrose anywhere near us unfortunately.

Thanks for the tip with using the toothbrushes. I was wondering if i had a spare hairbrush somewhere, so thats great.

Thanks xx

halosnhorns contains no parabens or sls and is about 2 quid

my DS2 had really really dry flaky skin all over but especially on his scalp. all sorts of lotions and potions were tried and tested and i eventually found that ASDA own make LITTLE ANGLES Top to Toe bath wash was the only thing that worked.

cece · 23/03/2010 22:05

My DS suffers from exzema and had cradle cap at 3 months.

TBH I just use warm water. I think I have used shamppo a few times when he was very young. Once i realised he had the dry skin then I started to rinse it with warm water and that only. His hair and scalp are fine now. Also I use olice oil for 20 ins prior to bathtime to soften the scaly patches.

He has a wash gel for his skin from the GP called doublebase wash gel. It doesn't lather.

Rob1n · 24/03/2010 14:44

Is it necessary to use specific baby products? I was thinking of using the shampoo I use for myself on my DS (it's called 'Naked) because it doesn't contain sodium laureth sulphate (which does not seem to be ommitted from many baby products).

Grandhighpoohba · 24/03/2010 14:51

Berts (Burts?) Bees do a baby shampoo thats great and not harsh. A bit expensive, but lasts for ages and smells lovely.

TeamAniston · 27/03/2010 20:59

Aqueous cream used as a wash. DD (5 months) had a few raised red and scaly patches on the back of her head that I thought might be eczema.

HV recommended using aqueous cream as a wash and then afterwards as a topical cream and, sceptical as I was, it cleared it up in less than 3 days. I haven't used anything else on her since then and have just asked the doctor for it on prescription

Good luck, hope it clears up soon!

ilovemydogandmrobama · 27/03/2010 21:01

Weleda children's calendula shampoo and body wash. Love it.

hw7342 · 28/03/2010 19:57

I was using just warm water up until 3 months. As my baby's head was really smelling of sweat i then started washing twice a week with a no nasties shampoo but it still smells after the next sleep (now 4.5 months). Does anyone else's?! I am thinking maybe to wash it everyday with some aqueous cream?

prettyinpunk · 28/03/2010 20:03

I second ilovemydogandmrobama. Weleda's calendula range, especially the body wash/shampoo is lovely. All my DCs have had dry skin and this is one product that does not aggravate but calms irritation and smells heavenly with no chemical nasties. I even use it myself.

TakeLovingChances · 29/03/2010 16:28

my DS has a patch of dry skin between his eyebrows, which I've been told is cradle cap.

He's 4 weeks old and so far I've been putting olive oil on it. It hasn't cleared up yet, but I hope it will soon.

I was also advised to not use Johnsons products.

MrsVidic · 29/03/2010 17:36

infaderm I can't reccommend it highly enough

sparkleshine · 29/03/2010 21:47

My DS also has that same patch of dry skin between his eyebrows as well. Although on his head its not as flaky, more scaley.
My HV suggested vaseline, not to use olive oil on his face. Only been using it a few days so far.
Currently trying the dentanox shampoo with no affect but will continue till the bottle runs out then will try others suggested if that doesnt work. Bot sure if i should use the shampoo but try oilive oil beforehand to help soften it
So confusing

We started off with an expensive one then switched to Dentinox cradle cap shampoo which cleared up the dry scalp and leaves her hair beautifully soft and sweet smelling

EasterBilby · 29/03/2010 23:18

I would have suggested Burts Bees, but I'm reserving judgement at the moment. I love the smell, it lasts for ages and it's never caused problems with DD's excema, but we've just bought our 2nd bottle after not having any for a few months and the excema on my hands has flared up. I'll try it again in a few days before I make my decision.

We only started using shampoo when DD started wearing her food. Until then it was water with a few drops of lavendar essential oil to make it smell nice. Olive oil for any dry skin patches.

I'd do as the HV advises, olive oil and stop using soap/shampoo completely until your DS starts getting dirty.

My friend is a hairdresser and she told me the reason Johnson's is so bad is because it's alkaline (similar to your eyes apparently, that's why it doesn't sting... although I've also read that they but a mild anaesthetic in it.)
It's actually that strong an alkaline that she's seen demonstrations where it was used as perm solution.
Your hair and skin are slightly acidic so Johnson's reacts and dries skin and hair out. Plus it's full of other nasty chemicals.
She always advises using Aussie Formula shampoo as it's the same pH as hair and skin. But obviously you have to be careful to keep it out of eyes.

LittlePushka · 29/03/2010 23:42

Hi! My DS1 had a dry patch on his scalp from a similar age to your DC. Tried olive oil as suggested above. Did not work but the dog followed DS around for a sneaky lick!

DS1 is 3.6 now and still has this dry patch which builds up despite trying a few different things dentinox smells ace but no effect.. Not heard of infaderm,...will try that now, thanks Mrs vidic.

Would love to know what works for you sparkleshine
