someone in our family is having a baby, shes only 18, & has v little money, so shes going to have lots to deal with. whats the best way to persuade her that washable nappies are best, i am sure they worked out cheaper than disposables when i had my baby, a few years ago, and that argument would clinch it for her i'm sure. does anyone know where i can get stats/information that will spell it out for her?

Sorry, was just being facetious about flushing poo.

Ooh yuck dinosaur, handwash? Eurgh!. I fling the liner in the loo. If necessary scrape poo off the nappy with a bit of toilet paper, but that doesn't happen often. And dry-pail (lavender oil on a cloth in the bucket and a tight-fitting lid sorts the smell). And fling it all in the washing machine. With a prewash sometimes. Usually at 40 and occasionally at 60. If the nappies are stained when they come out of the machine I hang them in the sunlight / spread them on the windowsill.

That survey; I think the gist was that if you wash at 90, tumble-dry, iron, have about 40 nappies and only use them on one child, etc, then you use the same amount of energy as if you used disposables. Based on a survey of 17 cloth-nappy users. Land-fill not considered.

empress..I was 18 when i had dd, and used cloth. Maybe get your relative a cloth starter pack as a baby gift - get really cute ones - and then how can she resist?? Find some really cute wraps, and high quality terries (most economical way, but folding may put her off for a bit) or cute shaped nappies.

www.naturebabies.co.uk/ does some really really cute wraps, and they are so adjustable that they will do the baby for a longer period of time.

thanks imccream & feffi - a starter pack is a great idea, and i'll check her local council site.

Empress · 22/07/2005 14:14

Sorry, me again. have checked her local council, they dont do free trials. so its a full starter pack i'm after now.but there are so many companies online that i'm completely bewildered! i dont remember there being so many when i was buying them for my baby (so thats a good sign i guess!). WHERE TO START? is there a MN thread somewhere with recommendations?
