German Book Recommendations for bilingual DD8

annasophia · 15/03/2010 11:19

My dd is almost 8 and speaks German and English. We live in the UK and she goes to school here. She enjoys reading and has recently started to read some German books by herself, maily beginner books (Leselöwen and similar), and has especially enjoyed 'Der Buchstabenfresser'.

We've read Pippi Langstrumpf together and she loved that too!

I was thinking of some of the Cornelia Funke books (as they are orgininally in German) but if anyone has any specific or other recommendations, I'd be really grateful.

Anyone?

DD likes the Connie books, but I have to admit that I am not so keen.

Tbh, I have not found so many really good German books for DC. They seem to be quite dry. With the exception of Cornelia Funke.

I am going to Germany at Easter so will have a look in one of the bookstores, if I find anything I will let you know.

Oh, just had a look at our book shelf and remembered

Ingo Siegner / Der kleine Drache Kokosnuss - our DC also loved his books about Hannover Zoo as we used to live there. Particularly Nachts auf der Zambezi.

DD also loved Heidi but is not reading that herself yet. I am going to look for a really nice edition of Heidi, the one I have is in English.

Briefe von Felix are lovely books too.

Thanks MmeLindt .

Yes, we love Briefe von Felix books - I used to read them to the children, but I suppose dd could have a go at reading them herself now.

I loved Heidi as a child, although I have to admit to mainly watching it on tv... Good suggestion.

Am slowly filling my basket at amazon.de, so if anyone has any other (useful!) suggeestions, I'd be grateful.

The 'useful' referred to the previous poster's rather unhelpful comment, which now seems to have been removed by mumsnet.

I saw that comment and I am glad that it has been removed. I did not have time to report the post myself.

Will have another think if I can come up with some others.

Oh God, the Connie books are just sickening in their self-satisfaction. And both DDs have LOVED them.

There are a couple of good threads on Leo:

this one

and and this one

DD2 loves the Petersson und Findus series and a series about a guinea pig called King-Kong by Kirsten Boie - she's pretty good in general. DD1 also liked the Sams books by Paul Maar, and the Hexe Lili series.

emkana · 17/03/2010 16:32

My dd's are bilingual (German/English) as well.#

They love all Astrid Lindgren - Bullerbue, Madita, Michel, Ronja Raeubertochter... there are many, and they are all great.

They have both loved Nesthaekchen as well, even though it's quite old-fashioned.

Sams books were popular here as well.

Otfried Preussler - Die kleine Hexe, Der kleine Wassermann, and especially Raeuber Hotzenplotz.

Jim Knopf und Lukas der Lokomotivfuehrer.

Kirsten Boie has done a few good books.

Erich Kaestner.

All these are probably more for reading together. For reading herself I would also say Connie (even though it's terrible) and Hexe Lilli and also Hier kommt Lola.

Completely agree with emkana's list - I would have put down the same authors. Michael Ende is a great author, he wrote Momo and Jim Knopf. And Ronja Raeubertochter by Astrid Lindgren is brilliant too.
