1 yo unsettled at night - nightmares?

DS has been sleeping through since he was about 3 months. He has always had phases of night waking (most notably when he's ill or when the nights were very cold). Lately though he has been waking for no apparent reason (since Christmas at least it has been nearly every night). He still sleeps in with us (goes down in his own cot no problem but often ends up in our bed if he's unsettled) and I wondered whether DH's snoring was waking him but having actually lain awake last night I know now this isn't the case.

I woke at 1.30 needing a pee, came back to bed (all done silently!) and couldn't get back to sleep straight away. All was quiet, no snoring, no noisy neighbours, nothing. DS stirred a bit then gave a small cry - just one sob, he wasn't actually awake. I was then on alert of course so stayed awake for a bit. He did this every few mins then woke up and cried properly - not really distressed, but would have been if I'd ignored it IYSWIM. I put him in our bed, gave him a cuddle and when he'd calmed down I decided to try and re-settle him in his cot. He went to sleep straight away but then kept doing that odd little cry every few minutes until he'd woken himself up again. He didn't need changing, he wasn't hungry or thirsty.... I can't work out why he keeps waking. Could it be bad dreams?

Any advice would be appreciated!

i wouldn't have thought it'd be bad dreams at one (i'm no expert though!), is it likely to be teeth?

we had the same problem, until our 2yo boy decided he wanted 2 share a bedroom with our 3yo daughter, now he seems quite happy and sleeps through most nights. i noticed he does often lie awake until she goes to bed tho-after thinking it was nightmares am now thinking it may be fear of being alone? hoping he'll go back into his room soon, but as long as he's sleeping thru...
i'm sorry, that doesnt really help you, but for me it was nice 2 c we're not the only ones!
