2 year old with sick bug - is this OTT?

DS1 has had this vomiting bug - has only been throwing up a couple of times a day, but for the last two nights we were worried about him vomiting in his sleep and choking, so DH slept on a mattress by his cot to keep an eye on him in the night.

I'm starting to think this was a bit OTT and overly cautious. Surely a sturdy two year old isn't going to choke on their vomit? But then adults do don't they [when drunk usually, granted].

What's the Mumsnet consensus? Oh, by the way, we don't use baby monitor as seems pointless in a flat.

Thanks

if its OTT then i am also OTT last week my dd (4yrs) had a vomiting bug & she had been sick in her sleep when i woke up to find her still asleep i panicked & slept in her room with her the next night just to be on the safe side . hope your lo is better soon .

If you don't think it is OTT then it isn't.

If we said leave him and he then choked to death it would be terrible for everyone.

Your child, your call. I hope he is better soon.

i really dont mean to worry you but yes children can choke on their vomit in their sleep , my cousin died this way 20yrs ago , he had SN & was 4.5yrs old .

Thanks both. Elmofan what a shock that must have been - the poor little one. I think if DS had actually been sick in his sleep, i would definitely be sleeping next to him. Hope she is better now.

Fab, fair point! I was looking less for actual advice, i suppose, rather a straw poll of what people would generally do in this situation. Sometimes it's just interesting to know where your actions are on the 'parenting scale' even if you end up doing what your gut tells you. And if it's OTT, so be it! I suppose it's just interesting to know the things you are chilled about, and the things you are OTT about, in context, as it were.

I always sleep with my 3 and 5 year old if they have tummy bugs. I'm not so much worried about them choking and dying (it hadn't occurred to me until reading this!) but I just think it's unpleasant for a small child to wake up and be sick on their own. If I'm with them I can usually help them sit up and be sick in a bucket and then reassure them and get them back to sleep quickly.

Oh Elmofan that's awful - so sorry to hear about your cousin. No wonder you were protective of your DD with that in your family history. There was a thread recently where someone's DH had been at school with a boy who had been accidentally strangled by something, and her DH had been especially careful about such things ever since.

Feeling much less like i was being OTT now

Oh I see

I think I would probably want so sleep close to a vomiting child.

CoffeeMum · 11/03/2010 14:49

Extremely good point Mrs Gravy - it's horrible being sick even when you're an adult, must be awful for a tiny child.

Sorry about the in a cross post inappropriate place.

I still still in DS bedroom if he's sick, and he's over 4 year old. I just don't want him to wake up in fear, and with a bit of luck I might be just in time to 'catch' the evidence in a bowl, which I just couldn't do if I'd wake up in our room and run across the hall.
