getting out of the house on time

Hello all,

I am fed up of the sheer trauma of trying to get myself and two kids out of the house in the morning. The screaming and the tantrums are exhausting, even those that aren't mine! When I get to school I see other families that have coats done up correctly, all bags with them, no toast shoved in toddlers hand and there on time and I think how do they do it?

We try to get things done by a set time i.e 08:00 breakfast on table, 08:30 get dressed, 08:45 leave house and that helps to a certain extent but it's still a rotten time of day.

What are other people doing that works? Am I the only one or is it just that I'm there too late to see the other parents struggling with it?

Your thoughts please x x

If mine start mucking about, or ignoring my (repeated) requests to get dressed/brush teeth/put coats and shoes on etc...

I tell DD1 that we will all (me, her and dd2) be going into her classroom where SHE will explain to her teacher EXACTLY why she is late. Even if class has started and everyone is on the carpet already

It works, haven't had to explain ourselves yet

She's Yr1 btw

i wouldn't bother with a star chart. not for this. sit them down say" we are going to have a new routine, this is what we are going to do...." everyone got that ? great. leave room. all smiley. hoorah !!
THEN JUST DO IT

Pretty much same routine as everyone else very military although we still seem to be frantic by the time we are putting shoes on! I get up at 7am shower and dressed by 7.30am. DS 5 and DD 2 normally up by then having milk watching cbeebies until I am ready. They have between 7.30am and 8am to get dressed then downstairs for breakfast and aim to be putting shoes on by 8.30am. Out the door at 8.40am for walk to school. We have never been late although we sometimes do get to school just as the bell is ringing!

Up at 7, breastfeed DD3 who is 4 months. 7.20 finish, wake up DD1 and DD2 (9 & 6), put clothes on their beds. I get dressed, they dress themselves while I dress DD1. Do hair, plaits etc ....DD1 goes downstairs and sets table for breakfast, pours orange juice, gets her cereal. All downstairs by 8. I make packed lunch, drinks while they eat. All bags packed night before. Shoes, coats on at 8.30 and leave by 8.35. 10 minute walk to school. Last 10 minutes can be manic but not been late yet.

I'm amazed that some people eat breakfast in their 'day' clothes. I'd just get marmite / tea / toothpaste down them, the dc's would be even worse. At least it doesn't matter if my pj's get a splodge of something on them.

norksinmywaistband · 10/03/2010 22:41

I have a similar problem, but for totally different reasons.

Dc are both up between 5am( DS has never slept past 6.30) and 6.45 DD

All organised great routine, but due to spare time they then start playing once up breakfast, teeth, dressed routing finished.

There is normally 45-60 mins they are playing for and then it is hell trying to get them to stop and put on coats/shoes etc.

I am seriously thinking about heading for the park in summer as at least then we will be out of the house

You're having breakfast too late, everything hinges on getting breakfast done and dusted as you can then do teeth, hair and school clothes without the risk of gunk over everything.

Have breakfast late and you do everything else late.

Please don't think we're early breakfast eaters though-mass hysteria here too.
