memorylapse · 06/03/2010 22:04

my 5 year old DD woke up with a raised temp this morning and cold symptoms..we dosed her up with calpol..but this evening her temp is rapidly going up despite the calpol and she looks dreadful..she is pale and red eyed and says her throat hurts and her nose sounds blocked..she also feels sick..shes obviously got a virus..but in the last 5 mins her temp has gone from 38.9 to 39.5 and Im started to feel v ery worried..weve stripped her down and sponged her with tepid water to no avail..despite her being my 4th child..Im in a bit of a flap..DH says Im being paranoid

Coldhands, that floppy stage makes the blood run cold. DS did this last February (helicopter airlift thing - I was scared to start with but when I saw 2 paediatricians + 3 nurses + a crash trolley waiting to meet us on the helipad at the hospital I nearly crapped myself) and then did the floppy thing in October (swine flu) but didn't fit because I stripped him off and sponged.

Hope the OP is on the way to hospital right now.

memorylapse, hope she is ok!

Georgimama · 06/03/2010 22:39

She'll be OK in hospital memory. They give scarily large doses of nurofen and paracetomol (and diazepam if they have to) but they can do it there. Good luck.

Im always mindful of high temperatures after seeing my baby sister have a fit when i was a teenager..she had measles. Thankfully she was admitted to hospital..and recovered and was fine. I tend to put mine in a warm bath and wet there hair give them good soak and give calpol at same time..and thankfully has usually done the trick and brought temp down. Hope your dd is ok and you dont have to wait to long in a & e.

These days they don't recommend bathing for fever, because the skin cools rapidly, and that signals the hypothalamus (temp control centre of the brain) to raise the body temperature, sending core body temperature even higher.

aristocat · 06/03/2010 22:51

memory
hope you are at hospital now, agree with everyone else that it can be so scary seeing them ill with high temp.

my DS used to have reigorts when he was about 3yo and his temp often reached 40.
it has been 41 but luckily we were in hospital at the time.

hope she gets better soon, please come back and tell us you are all ok

rotool · 06/03/2010 23:04

so much luck memorylapse x

DH has taken her and DD1 who is 19 has gone with him..Ive got other DC;s so have stayed at home with them...took her temp before they left..it had gone up to 40....I wont go to bed until I know all is well..I feel sick with worry..DH said it was best if DD1 went with him as Im having a difficult pregnancy and have diabetes and recently was in hospital with a bleed..but I feel awful not being there with her

Hope they dont keep him waiting to long so that you can stop worrying and get some sleep.

Hope she is ok memorylapse. try and stay calm if poss for the baby although can imagine how hard that must be. they'll take good care of her in the hospital.

memorylapse · 07/03/2010 00:28

DH has texted to say theyve got her temp down to 39 and are monitoring her...apparently the nurses all want to keep her!

MmeLindt · 07/03/2010 06:49

How is she this morning, Memorylapse? And how are you.

memorylapse · 07/03/2010 11:34

they are back..turns out DD has tonsilitis but it had come on very quickly..when she arrived they gave her a larger dose of paracetamol which helped to bring her temp down.so DD perked up a bit. DH said she was such a hit with the nurses, they all wanted to adopt her!

She has anti biotics and some more paracetamol solution..apprently the doctor told DD, she has to have a couple of duvet days!

She is a lot brighter at the moment although her throat really hurts her so shes not eating..and she still has a temp, but thank goodness not a v high one, DD thinks its hilarios that she was asked to provide a urine specimen and had to wee into a cardboard pot

tortoiseonthehalfshell · 07/03/2010 11:38

Oh thank God, I'm so relieved for you.

Your instincts were dead on. Hope things are smooth from now on.

MmeLindt · 07/03/2010 13:12

Thank goodness. Glad you took her to A&E. Tonsillitis is really painful. Hope she enjoys her duvet days and is feeling better soon.

waitingforbedtime · 07/03/2010 13:29

Glad she is ok. Tonsilitis in wee ones can be horrendous so good youve caught it.

thisisyesterday · 07/03/2010 14:25

am so glad she is ok ML!

aristocat · 07/03/2010 14:30

oh memory glad she is ok

i was going to suggest tonsilitis last night because DS had the same and it progressed so quickly, but i deleted my post.

ABs will start working soon and she will be lots better.

Bucharest · 07/03/2010 14:37

I was also going to suggest tonsilitis and did the same Aristo, dd has it regularly and it always starts with a monster temperature.

Our paediatrician incidentally always gives us this "guideline" for temperatures....up to 38/38.5 it's perfectly OK in most cases even without meds, as it's the body's way of fighting off whatever is attacking it. Give meds if the child is uncomfortable (which let's face it, they are probably going to be!) Over 38.5 give meds, over 39 ring doc, over 40, ring doc now or if out of hours get checked over in A and E.

I must say I'm always a bit lax until it does get over 39...whereas dp in my case is the opposite, if she has a "temp" of 37 he's chuntering about hospitals!

OP- glad dd is making a speedy recovery...blimmin tonsils are a 'mare.

memorylapse · 07/03/2010 14:39

thanks all..she is brighter today but still very poorly..at least her temp is a bit more manageable

BITCAT · 07/03/2010 15:21
