Anyone know a remedy that works? My baby son is starting to find it irritating.

The Dentinox cradle cap shampoo worked wonders for my DD, only took two washes I think and it was all gone. You can get it in Boots (and probably other places as well).

Lolbilly · 05/03/2010 10:12

My DS has just had a mild bout and dentinox cradle cap shampoo got rid of it in 2 washes.

oilatum bath emolient applied neat to damp skin works like magic - and you can use the rest of the bottle in baths for weeks after.

Try a plastic nit comb if you have one, apply conditioner and comb, comes off a treat.

DramaInPyjamas · 05/03/2010 16:24

Olive oil works really well. As does almond oil.

misshardbroom · 05/03/2010 17:30

I came on here to say what lovecheese said about the nit comb! I had given up ever getting rid of DS2's (he has very thick, wavy hair and an aversion to having it combed) but when he started preschool and I started routine bug-busting, it vanished within a week.

woopsidaisy · 06/03/2010 08:28

Both my DS had cradle cap so badly, they looked like aliens! My aunt who is a HV told me to cover head in vaseline overnight, get soft toothbrush, and "brush" the vaseline off next day-worked a treat.Dentinox didn't work at all for us.

PurpleCrazyHorse · 06/03/2010 15:56

We use a baby brush on our DD's cradle cap, although it's quite mild. It takes a little while, a bit of a slowly, slowly approach but DD loves the scalp massage

waitingforbedtime · 06/03/2010 16:06

Grapeseed oil rubbed into the scalp, left overnight and then lightly 'scrubbed' off in the morning with a baby brush.

SKYTVADDICT · 06/03/2010 16:11

Conditioner and nit comb used here too. Worked a treat. Never came back.

JackBauer · 06/03/2010 16:11

I second nit combing. Had tried everything for DD2 as she has really thick hair, oil just got soaked up and was impossible to wash out and now at 2.5 she is finally clear of it after her first battle with nits.

Dentinox worked here too. In fact I still use it on him as it smells so gorgeous

PavlovtheCat · 06/03/2010 18:57

i pick it off

lovecheese · 06/03/2010 19:00

God how satisfying is picking it off? especially the big brown bits. One of the great pleasures of having children.

BertieBotts · 06/03/2010 19:02

Ewww no it is disgusting. You are not supposed to pick it anyway, it can get infected. I did used to pick very gently at DS' a bit though.

PavlovtheCat · 06/03/2010 19:03

bertie i don't pick the bits that are not ready to come off, only the bits that have already turned flakey and ready to come off. It leaves the skin normal looking underneath, not red/raw. DS is 13 weeks, and it is mostly gone.

BertieBotts · 06/03/2010 19:05

Yes that is what I used to do too - I thought there is no way it can get infected unless the skin is broken anyway.

Just - yuk! Satisfying but horrible!

Coldhands · 06/03/2010 22:39

My DS had it really badly, It looked like he had thick ginder hair and all his baby hair came out with it .

I had stuff from the HV but the best thing was olive oil. Worked fantastically but don't pick it (however much you may be tempted) as it can infect it.

Ponymum · 06/03/2010 22:55

Tried olive oil for ages but DD's just kept getting worse and worse, and really looked like it was heading for being infected. In the end we got some medicated shampoo from the GP - Capasal in a brown bottle. Worked brilliantly. Had to use it for a while but once gone it has never come back.

chipmonkey · 06/03/2010 23:32

baby oil applied and left overnight, then nit-combed out the next day.

wheeldog · 07/03/2010 20:13

I tried dentinox, olive oil and oilatum for my son, and it finally went at age 2.5 thanks to Dermax (can buy at the chemist, though they had to order it specially for me. No prescription needed. Goes a long way, comes in a huge bottle though).

FiveBells · 08/03/2010 11:20

Pawpaw ointment, left in as long as possible (overnight at least), then combed out. Wash as normal. It doesn't come back!
