when did you lose the baby monitor?

Ds(2) still wakes in the night.
He is in the next room to us. DH rarely hears him, even with the monitor on. Starting to think DS might settle himself if I didn't hear him and go into him. Thoughts??

Ditch it!! defo. I ditched our DS 3.5 now as soon as he got his bed. He has a light in his room and he is not allowed to get out of bed until it come on. (doesnt always work.

He used to grumble and cry all time, now never hear him and he does settle himself.

Just need to get rid of DD 1.5 monitor and then it wont disturb me. She does cry but she settles herself but we are upstairs and she is downstairs so wouldnt hear her and she is still in cot/stairs issue so cant come and get us if needs to.

Good luck.

Still use it for DS (2.4). There's no real need but I like to know he's asleep. At night, we can hear him really clearly through the wall so no need for it then.

If he cries at night, we go to him. Usually give it a few mins to see if he'll settle himself down though.

Bought one when DS1 was born but never actually used it for either DC - the first time I turned it on it just picked up the local taxi company's radio, lots of crackling, any baby noises were drowned out. I found that both of them cried quite loud enough for us to hear when they really needed us, even downstairs... Just don't close all the doors or turn the TV/music too loud.

after one week.

Bodenbabe · 04/03/2010 12:56

I still use one and I'm not telling you how old my kids are My thinking is this - problems aren't always noisy. For example, choking is usually very quiet - you aren't going to hear that from downstairs or in another room. Personally, I sleep better knowing that I will hear any problems but each to his own, of course.

lovechoc · 04/03/2010 13:01

Personally I thought it was useless when I had DS right next door to me, and I was always early to bed anyway. He was loud enough to hear without a monitor insitu!lol

It's good to use your own judgement from very early on, rather than relying on a piece of equipment IME. If you had a power cut it would be pretty useless anyway...

MunchMummy · 04/03/2010 13:04

Less than 2 weeks - got far more sleep without it on and trust me, you can hear them if they want to be heard.

lovechoc · 04/03/2010 13:25

munchmummy I totally agree with you. babies are noisy enough as it is without the added stress of having a monitor right at your ear drum.

libbyssister · 04/03/2010 13:36

Never had one with either DS1 or 2 and won't be getting one for DS3. We live in a three storey terrace and we can hear them yelling out for us from the top floor when we're on the bottom. Maybe ours are just noisy...?! Sometimes we have to shut all the doors and turn up the TV to drown them out from two floors away! (Not when they were newborn, obviously)

I've never wanted to hear every burp and grumble and even when they've been sick in bed they don't seem to swallow it when young and are quite happy to sit up and chuck up in their laps once they're able!

Ditch it, you'll hear DS and if sometimes you're in a deep sleep he'll just learn to shout louder to get your attention!

Bought one for DD1 as wanted to do everything by the book and MIL "advised" one in her oh-so-knowing way; gave it to a friend for her baby when mine was too old to need one; forgot to ask for it back for DD2, must get round to it sometime, but oh look shes 6 now and we coped; never even crossed my mind with DD3 - as munchmummy says you know when they want you, and I laugh when I think back to all those nights with the PFB watching the frigging lights flickering away! Madness. A friend even bought one of those movement sensitive mats for in the cot and installed a camera in their DDs room to monitor her!!! Get rid of it now, you will thank me.

cyb · 04/03/2010 19:57

I never had a baby monitor. I still heard my kids when it was bad enough (eg puking up) but not low level moaning and groaning

cory · 04/03/2010 19:57

Never got round to getting one

muppetgirl · 04/03/2010 19:58

it never worked properly in our house with ds 1 so we stopped using it.

Never used one with ds 2 or 3.

Rhian82 · 04/03/2010 20:04

Never had one. DS was in our room until he was one, then right next door (and the wall is very thin right by my head when I'm in bed).

potplant · 04/03/2010 20:13

DT1 threw mine down the stairs and it broke when he was about 18m-ish. I thought that DTs wouldnt survive the night if I couldn't hear every single breath but they certainly did.

I have always woken up when they aren't well, sometimes they don't have to even shout me. I just know

potplant · 04/03/2010 20:17

Forgot to add that my SIL had one for my nephew till he was about 7. It got lost when they moved house, I have my suspicions that my bro was the culprit .

katiepotatie · 04/03/2010 20:20

I use one for both dc's (almost 3 & 9 months) while we are downstairs and they are in bed, otherwise I wouldn't hear either of them. Once we go to bed, they are turned off, as they're in the next room.

Wonderstuff · 04/03/2010 20:31

Never used one for dd, she was super loud and our house was small, will only get one for dc2 (currently pg) if by some miracle we move to a house so enormous I can't hear it wailing if I'm down the bottom of the garden or something.

Loved that scene from Gavin and Stacy where Ness is comforting the baby down the baby monitor then the camera pans out and he's actually in the bed next to her.

BikeRunSki · 04/03/2010 20:41

DS (18 months) is in the next room. We stopped using the baby mionitor at night when he was about 6 months old! And now we don't use it in the evenings when he is in bed and we are downstairs, because he broke it.
