I expect this is normal but it is worrying me a little for some reason...

My DD is 3 and a half and just doesn´t listen and i don´t mean in a naughty way.Just seems to ignore whatever i ask/say to her.For example i will ask her a question and 9 times out of 10 it will get completely ignored no matter how many times i repeat it or it will get replied to with something completely irrelevant or a question of her own....any ideas anyone if this is normal?

She has nothing wrong with her hearing btw...

Sounds completely normal! You might need to adjust your expectations - start by calling her name, and once you have her full attention, then ask the question.

3 yr olds often go off into some flight of fancy that has nothing to do with what adults are thinking. Sometimes I love the tangents that we go off to and follow along, other times it's just plain annoying...

At 3yrs, yes its normal to selectively hear and respond, and repond with your own agenda.

How do you know her hearing is fine? Newborn hearing screen doesn't test the middle ear, only the inner ear. An audiologist (not a HV) needs to test the middle ear to be absolutely sure. If you're sure then it wont be that, just normal development. If you're not 100% certain, ask your GP for a referral. Glue ear affects 1 in 5 children, its really common and not a big deal once diagnosed.

I agree with Boo, gain her attention before asking a question and try talking back to her about her topic and see if she can follow a self-directed train of thought long enough to have a two-way conversation for a couple of turns.
