What comes next after megablocks?

My DS is 2.5 and I feel like he needs more of a challenge than his bin bag of megabocks but I'm not sure what to buy him next...

Is it Duplo? What is Duplo!? I've seen themed sets so I guess it's more than building blocks (is it building blocks at all?)

I guess Lego will be too old for him

What about Playmobil, is that a building block thing? For what age?

Stay within the Lego range, and the pieces will all be more-or-less compatible. We have every size under the sun, from Megablocks all the way to standard Lego - the result of having 3dc of different ages - and find that they all play with all of them.

I think the next size up is Duplo, and you can definitely get buckets of blocks, as well as themed sets.

Playmobil is nice, but too many teeny bits ATM. I'm sure he won't eat them, or insert them nasally, bu tthey will drive you nuts.

Duplo

Duplo consists of building blocks, you can buy loads of other add on sets of duplo - containing animals to fit on the blocks, flowers, etc etc...

Duplo is a form of Lego and is the next step up from megabloks. We have a dinosaur set that ds had for christmas about 3 years ago and it still gets played with regularly - his 13mth old sister plays with it too. The proper Lego and Playmobil have lots of tiny pieces and more suitable when they get older. Playmobile isn't building blocks - more like a modern day model making imo.

Playmobil is not building stuff and has loads of tiny peices. My DS is 21 months and I have discovered he loves it but have to watch him very carefully (he plays with his sisters!)

Thank you!!

So it goes Megablocks -> Duplo -> Lego which are all made by Lego right?

And playmobil is a similar thing by a different manufacturer. I think i'm getting it!

Simple boxes of Duplo say suitable from age 1 1/2. My DS (one tomorrow) enjoys playing with it - if not actually building anything yet!
