Am I being ridiculous worrying about DD2?

DD2 is 2 1/2. She was a late walker; 19 months before she could. She does hit her milestones, but later than average iyswim. Now, I have no concerns whatsoever about her cognitive function; she is bright, speaks well for her age and understands me perfectly. But her gross motor skills don't seem very good to me. She is still not very steady on her feet and tunbles over a lot, even when there doesn't really seem to be a reason to do so, ie, smooth path, flat floor.

I suppose deep down I am worried because she had such a scary birth. Something wasn't right all the way through the pregnancy, she became terribly quiet in the last couple of weeks and in labour her pulse went down to below 60 bpm and she was born with the cord three times around her neck and blue as a blue thing. She was very "floppy" as a little baby, and curiously "absent". I can't really explain it better than that. Like she wasn't really "there". Then when she was about a month old it was as if someone switched on the lights, and she was "there". I sound quite barking don't I? Anyway, like I say, I'm not really worried about her cognitively, but she really does not seem very able in terms of gross motor skills. Can anyone advise me/tell me I am being silly? Thanks.

Does she appear floppy now? Does she have firm muscle tone or not? Do her ankles ever seem to bend over?

The reason I ask is that she sounds quite similar to my dd, who was later diagnosed with hypermobility syndrome. This causes bendy unstable joints but also typically comes with poor muscle tone, poor proprioception (knowing what your arms and legs are doing) and poor balance.

Dd also didn't walk until 19 months and kept having unexplained falls in the strangest situations. But cognitively she was fine; could talk the hind leg off a donkey. The next thing that happened was that she started developing ankle pains around age 7.

It might be worth asking the HV to look at her joints. If there is a problem, special boots can help a lot.

Her muscle tone appears fine, but thinking about it, yes, her ankles do seem to do that. I will give the HV a buzz. Thank you cory that is really helpful.

Could you try gymnastics or ballet to help her develop her motor skills?
