Is this a rude word like w*ker?
Or does it just mean idiot?

not as rude as wanker, but still very colloquial

I would say it's more on a par with idiot, and defo not as offensive as wanker.

I always think it means someone who's being/or is a bit dim.

Oh good.
DS has just 'invented' the word without knowing it already exists IYSWIM and is using it all the time. I didn't want to accidentally offend any other English speakers we come across.

I think that a plonker is, ahem, a gentleman's appendage - see here for a definition. Then the term entered general use to mean idiot, thanks to DelBoy. So some people may take offence.

StillCrazy is right.

It means a penis.

And, by extension (no pun intended) a fool.

A bit like a Gentile version of schmuck or putz.

Thanks, I don't know why I didn't think about googling it myself.
