If your child's Nintendo DS broke through lack of care would you buy them a new one?

Have just heard from a friend that their dc's DS has broken and that if dc is good they are going to buy them a new one.

Personally if that was my child, I think I would say something along the lines of "You should be more careful with your possessions - if you would like a new one then you will need to save up for it".

Am I wrong in thinking that? I mean they are over £100!

i suppose so, but ime they are easy to break! ds has one that is held together in one corner with electrical tape. they need to be made stronger

My current 'deal' with dd1 is that if she cleans her room and keeps it clean for a month I will pay for another repair to her DS, if it is not repairable she can have a 2nd hand one.

First time my son's PSP broke, I gave him the benefit of the doubt and paid for it to be repaired. However, after seeing how he handled it (with little respect), when it broke a second time I told him he had to save up his pocket money and that we would go halves on a second hand one from Ebay.
He has treated the one from Ebay with more care since he had to pay for half of it, and also no doubt because I told him if he breaks that one then he's completely on his own.

I have taken insurance out on ds2's as they are so easy to break but we found a company that sell new casing etc that you can fit yourself - really cheap too. can post a link if you want sea.

Dependes how the dc has treated it really.

My dc had a ds each Christmas before last. They have been (mostly) v careful with them.

The hinge on ds's seems to have recently cracked and I really told him off for being careless.

But on reflection, I think he has been quite careful with it really (it's his prized possession). I Googled the problem wrt getting it fixed and it seems to be a v common wear and tear type problem, so I do feel bad about bawling him out about it now

i took out the insurance as our ds1 age 6 is a tad clumsy!! But he also has it in a leather case to protect it when playing so i think that has save it a few times!!

i would get a second hand one from gamestation next time and take out the insurance

KentuckyFriedPenguin · 19/02/2010 11:48

It would depend how it was broken tbh

Its not a new one in anycase - was a second from Game

No I wouldn't.My dd lost her gameboy and was just so blase thinking father christmas would buy her a new one, me and dh said she must buy it out of money in her building society. DH and her went shopping and got one, not sure how much it cost, but she does handle it with a lot more care.

Ds dropped his bu accident and now it has a flippy lid. He could still use it though so I left it like that, they brought out the DSi a couple of years later so I brought him one of these.

lilackaty · 20/02/2010 11:33

My dd dropped hers on the stairs - it had already been fixed once so she got a dsi for her birthday - she had to wait a long time between and knew it was because she had broken it. The dsi has insurance though.
I guess it's up to your friend though

roisin · 20/02/2010 12:32

My boys had to save up birthday/christmas money and pocket money for over a year to buy their own in the first place!

midori1999 · 20/02/2010 13:20

My son lost his almost new DS at the stables once. (He was about 6 at the time) I was cross that he hadn't taken better care of it, but also felt really sorry for him.

I got a new one, but made him wait until his Birthday and couple of months after.
