Oh Crap, MIL has tried to help out....

OK,

I have posted on here before about my smelly nappies and have finally sorted it out but now I have another potential crisis

I am 37 weeks pg with DC 2, suffering from SPD and MIL has been round and offered to help out by putting the nappies onto wash. Lovely - Gave her the instructions which I have written out for my mum when she comes to stay (once I go into Labour) They state

PREWASH Cool with a slosh of vinegar, once finished,
normal 40/60 depending on how many pooey ones with less than 40ml of powder and vinegar in softener drawer, also press extra rinse

So just as she was leaving she said ' I noticed the nappies smelt a bit so I put some lenor, i bought over, in as well as the vinegar'

Nowhere in the instructions does it state fabric conditioner so why she did it is beyond me - she could at least have asked (although when she helps out with normal laundry she does put in double the amount of softener anyway - I hate the stuff and use sainsburies basics to appease DH, hence why she bought the lenor round)

Now I have Modern Baby Pop Ins, Bumgenius V2, Tots Bots, Motherease OS, and Sandys - Are they really f*&^%d or can I rescue them.

Please reassue me that they will be ok and not have to be consigned to the bin

I think strip washing them should work, Mil's 'eh who'd have 'em!

Thanks 4

I am really annoyed as I have just had to stripwash them all as some of the BG's were really smelling and the CM was complaining

They should be ok, i put some conditioner in a load of mine (tots bots) by accident once. They were very fluffy afterwards, (which was actually quite nice!) but they were ok after a couple of washes. In fact I just used them as they were, and didn't bother strip washing them.

Just mention it to your MIL specifically next time!

Try using bio powder then strip wash, should work.

I heard vinegar was bad for bumgenius?

differentnameforthis · 14/02/2010 12:13

Sorry, but it is hardly the end of the world.

She obviously thought she was helping. Maybe she didn't realise they should smell the way they did.

Rewash them, strip wash! They will be reusable.

My mum did the same with some smart nappy inserts a couple of years ago after I asked her to just put them in the wetbag. She thought she was being helpful and I just carried on using them as usual, thay were fine. I think one dose will just wash out, it's repeated doses that would really clog the fibres.

Vinegar is fine on inserts and flat nappies, I think but it really isn't great for pocket nappies and using it will void the warranty on most brands.

swampster · 14/02/2010 13:53

And yes, they should be fine. Maybe a bit less absorbent to start with but once any residue has washed out they should be as they were.

Actually I often use softener on mine. I like Ecover. I've never found it made much difference to absorbency, and it does keep them soft!
