"Universal" parenting principles

I've been asked to take part in a BBC World service series that starts with 6 parenting 'experts' discussing what are "universal" parenting principles in a studio - they then get a bunch of journos to go to different countries (I think theres' one in China, one in Africa etc) and spend a week with a family who are asked to put those principles into practice....

I wondered what the collective wisdom of mumsnet was - the principles have to apply universally - across class and cultures... not as easy at it might seem.

I'll kick off with an easy one...
To ensure the physical survival of the child through the provision of food and shelter, and where possible, to provide a diet that ensures the physical thriving of the children.

Any offers?

Universal parenting principles ? There seem to be some stardards which are applied universally.....How about the similarities in the major Religions ( SORRY to bring up the R word here in case someone is offended )- just an example.
Around the world, generally accepted teachings such as "thou shall not steal", or about the unacceptability of telling untruths, killing unnecessarily etc all apply to any parent irrespective of creed, color and R.
Then, above that are the specific skills required to survive in "our" world - agree with soupdragons African farmer example. He does not need to know about programming, while my boy does not need to know about the breeding cycle of the Tsetse fly.

On a deeper level though....Parents only interested in coke, crisps and Eastenders are teaching their children skills which will hold them in good stead in the dole queue. Parents who lead by example, are hard working and dilligent, consistent and fair and put effort into every task they perform, will teach a whole different set of skills.

Just for everyone's info, the first programme (where we're in a studio discussing the principles) will broadcast on Sunday 14th September at 2.15 British Summer Time. You'll also be able to hear the broadcasts on www.bbcworldservice.com for 7 days afterwards.
