My 8 month old is not weight bearing yet, when I hold him up his feet only very lightly press on the ground, he is no where near supporting himself.

is this normal at 8 months? my eldest was weight bearing at around 7 months and could stand up perfectly at 8 months (as long as he was holding on to something for support) but my littlest one is no where near that

I have annoying friends with babies of similar ages and they are all doing it!
he isn't crawling either, but can "slither" along and roll to get around, and has only just started sitting up and isn't even very stable when he does that.

Is it worth contacting my HV?

hello - my ds is not weightbearing and he is 10 months, he only learnt to sit on his own without falling about a month ago. I wasn't too worried, surely 8 months is really early to stand?

He is a long thin little boy and I think he just didn't have enough body mass to keep him upright sitting and the same for standing he just seems to top heavy. He too does the commando crawl/slither thing not proper crawling but he gets around just fine and seems happy with that.

When he had his 8 month check the hv said he was doing fine, she said they only need to put their feet down for a count of ten to pass the weightbearing "test"

Don't take any notice of your friends, I know it is hard but I really have developed my stock phrase, "well he will do it when he is ready to..." however I don't think we will be making much use of the toddle truck I got him Christmas yet! Incidentally that said from 10 months on the box.

My DD didn't weight bear at 8 month HV check they used to do. She was by about 10-11 months. HV said only worth worrying about if the baby gets to a year and not weight bearing. DD would not even put her feet down

My nearly 11 months DS has sort of just started crawling although been weight bearing since 6 or 7 months and now cruising.

They are all different. Enjoy the lack of movement!

I'm a nanny and look after an 18 month old. She wouldn't bear any weight on her legs until about 15 months! If you held her up on her feet she'd just lift her legs off the ground until you put her back down on her bum. She just suddenly got it and started standing/cruising at about 15 months, walking at about 16/17 months.

I think it is far too eary for you to be worried

is your baby quite chubby ? That can slow development slightly in comparison to others...once he starts moving the chubbiness will go

was your first a girl ? My boy was much slower in physical development than my girl...and this is broadly true in many cases

some babies just don't like to weightbear until they feel perfectly stable

I don't think you have anything to worry about

has he had his 8 month check yet ?

My DS1 didn't weight bear until about 18 months, he started bottom shuffling at around 20 months and took his first steps at 22 months. He never crawled and the toddle truck remained untouched until DS2 turned up!

Our HV was excellent, she discussed things at length with us and as there is a family history of bottom shuffling and late walking we decided just to see what happened. He's now 4yrs 4mths and all is well with his gross motor development.

It's very easy to worry, and chatting with your HV or GP may be a good idea. They may refer for a paeds/physio assessment just to double check that all is well.

Hi! Dd "failed" 8 month check as wasn't weight bearing. HV said just to keep an eye on her and I took her back just before she turned one when she started to bear weight. She was walking at 14 months and crawling shortly after. I was so worried but she can now jump higher than any 2 and a half year old I know - lol! Can't stop you worrying as I did but make sure you pop to HV if worried as they will put your mind at ease xxx Oh and remember to enjoy this time before they are up and running.
