4th birthday present? Bike?

Is it a good idea to get DS a bike for his 4th birthday? I have no idea when I learnt to ride a bike!

If so, how should I pick a bike?

Thanks for any help.

A bike is a great idea, we just got a bike for our 4 year olds birthday (actually his second one as he wore out the tyres on his first one my mum bought him just before third birthday). He can't ride without his stablisers yet (although I do know one 3 year old who can) but he loves cycling along paths and pavements and sometimes it's a lot easier than getting him to walk.

We just got him a 14" bike which I think is about the right size for most 4 year olds. There's loads out there, and I think they are mostly quite similar.

It did take my ds a little time to learn to pedal but he was a bit littler so I'm sure your DS will be off in no time!

Go to Halfords or Toys r us and get your DS to sit on some. I agree with Bibmother you're probably looking at 14 inch. A great 4th b'day present.

(Also consider scooters though, big hits with my guys)

A bike is a greeat 4th birthday present.

But they are not all the same. Make sur eit is a proper well made bike or it could put him off cycling properly.

I recommend a Ridgeback, they are pretty much the best bikes out there in that price range. DS got a ridgeback for his 4th birthday and was riding without stabalisers after just four hours of practice. He did have a balance bike before this.

He is now six and at the weekend (warning: proud mummy boast coming up) he mastered the art of cycling with no hands and cna cycle no handed for up to a minute at a time. I am very gealous as I can not do this.

Don;t go for the cheapo character bikes with all the unnecessary plastic on them that toys R us love.

14" ridgeback

Thanks everyone....

tassisssss - scooter was Christmas pressy - he does love it

The ridgeback looks a nice bike - does it have a recommendation of what height a child should be to use it? I forgot to mention that my DS is a very big boy! He is 114cm tall - size of an average 6 year old (but extremely skinny).

we, on the other hand, went for cheap character bikes and ds was cycling with stablisers before he was 3 and without before he started school!

can anyone also explain to me what a balance bike is and how it should be used & by what age of child? It looks like a bike without pedals - I've never seen one before!
