Should I take my daughter to the doctors as she's wetting herself every day at 5 years old?

Hi, my daughter is 5 but has a developmental dalay of about 2 years. She used to be dry day and night, she has been for the last year or so. Recentltly though, she's really gone down hill and is wetting herself constantly, sometimes up to 4 times a day. Nothing has changed in her life recently. She is in reception but loves her teacher and has lots of friends. She has never had any control of her bowels, but now she's wetting herself as well it's becoming a real problem. I have so much washing to do all the time and it's awkward when we go anywhere with her. I'm thinking of using pull ups again, but that would be a step in the wrong direction and she'd probubly just do it in the pull up insted of going to the toilet.
She dosn't seem to mind being wet, and will never tell me that she's wet. She's done it at school before and hasn't said anything and has come home with a tide mark up her shirt and knickers where it's dried in. I've asked her to tell the teacher and the teacher has said told my daughter that she must say if she's wet.
I'm wondering wether I should take her to the doctors. She dosn't have any other symptoms.
I would like to rule out anything medical, before I get really with the situation.

It could well be tied up with her other issues, perhaps the stress of moving to reception/hard work of trying to keep up means she doesn't give toileting the attention she used to?

I would rule out a UTI with the doc before you consider anything else

Thank you, she's just done it again for the 5th time today.
I'll get her an appointment for tomorrow.

Sounds just like my eldest 2 daughters, who both suffer from recurrent UTI's. Def go to GP and ask for urine test. My eldest daughter had such a severe UTI, with no symptons, that she was in hospital for 5 days. She is now fine after prophylactic antibiotics for a year. Other daughter is now on them!

Get her checked for a UTI, but also, have you had any more investigations about the bowels (I have posted info on at least 2 threads in the past where you've mentioned her bowel problems) because extreme constipation can cause loss of bladder control, just as loss of bowel control is a sign of extreme constipation.
In any case - take her to the GP

mummyloveslucy · 07/02/2010 19:52

Oh, thanks! I'll definatly get her checked out. I will be relieved in a way if it is, as it'll be something that can be cured with antibiotics.
If not, then it's likely to be linked to her poblems and will take a long time to get her back on track.

good luck x

Thanks, she is having her Movicol every other day, and is going more regularly. I did wonder if it could be this.
During the holidays, I'll put her dose up to 1 a day and see if that helps. I can't at the moment though as it gives her the runs and she'll do it in her knickers at school.
It is half term soon, so I'll give it a go.

I didn't realise re. the constipation

could also be connected

get thee to the gp

mummyloveslucy · 10/02/2010 00:09

I've taken her and she's having a urine sample tested. He thinks it could be a UTI, or it could be developmental/ behavioral.
So nothing very enlightening. We'll have to wait and see now.

Hi. If its not a UTI perhaps you could revert back to pullups for a while, though can understand your reluctance to do this.
If your dd has a develop. delay of 2 yrs, emoyionally shes really only 3, and may not be ready to be fully toilet trained yet- even if shes been reliable for quite some time.
It would take the stress off both of you for a while. Also,it would save your dd having wet clothes all day at school, if she cant tell the teacher shes wet.

Was it a UTI? How is it going?
