I love my Bumgenius pockets and am considering increasing my stock with some Flips.

Is anyone using them and if so what do you think?

yes I'd be interested in feedback too

tellyaddict · 06/02/2010 21:19

I haven't used one, but that's because I saw it at a trade show and was shocked at how rubbish and rather cheap and nasty it looked tbh. It is no more than a prefold (and most experienced cloth users don't get on with prefolds, not enough absorbency ime), which can be interchanged with 2 other types of insert, one of which was claimed to be biodegradable in something like 12 days in landfill. The only problem is that 3% of it in total non-biodegradable (the resin), they can't get rid of it, and people that no way more than me on things biodegrading in landfill claim that there is no way the pads will biodegrade in days or months even, as landfill is packed so tightly there isn't enough air etc to break them down, so essentially no better than a disposable. The inserts are just placed inside the 'wrap' part of the nappy and slightly tucked under the ends iyswim, but the quality of the wrap etc was not at all good from what I could see.

There are much, much better nappies out there that I would recommend over BG Flip!

Sorry if that sounded like a rant... wasn't meant to be, just my opinion .

mumface · 06/02/2010 21:45

I have a couple and think they are great. I have tried a lot of other nappies and think the quality is equal to the Bumgenius pocket. It is just a cheaper more simple idea. The outer is a good stretchy fit on both my 7 month and almost 3 year old. The insert lasts 3 hour, can make 4 with an Easy peasy hemp underneath. The insert sits under the flaps and I have never had one move out of place. I have heard the colour in the wraps can leak a little and you have to wash separately for a few washes which I did and havn't had any problems washing with white nappies now. Have heard a lot of positive reviews about them.

Thanks Mumface, think I'll go for some.
My finger has been hovering on the BUY button all day, just need a whiff of positivity about them and they're mine

Is the insert like a pocket insert with a fleecy covering?

I thought it poppered into place, but it sounds like it just sits in position.

DP doesn't like our Wonderoos because of the poppers for some reason, but we've got the velcro-ey pockets he can use if he's adverse to the poppery Flips.

OP posts:
mumface · 06/02/2010 22:44

The insert has no poppers, just sits in. It has a suedecloth like lining on it, and seams to fold down smaller which say small/medium/large on them. Make sure you get one of the several BOGOF offers around atm.

LackaDAISYcal · 06/02/2010 22:50

ooh, was just wondering this myself, and have also been hovering over the add to basket button for a couple of days.

tellyaddict, you are right about the landfill thing, but nothing biodegrades well in a landfill situation, inspite of manufactirer's claims to the contrary. From my "googling" of them today, the main selling point of them would be the option of using the disposable insert when on holiday, as a lot of cloth users (myself included) use dispos rather than taking enough cloth with them and trying to find laundrettes etc or washing by hand . the wraps could be washed by hand easily and would be dry over night and the inserts thrown away....

...and the BG inserts, which do sound better than your average disposable from an environmental pov, and a reuseable wrap, are surely a better option than a fully disposable nappy? Of course what's to stop me just buying the disposable inserts and using some of my existing wraps??? and then Boots do disposable nappy pads so why not just use those?

It is still a prefold though, but then what are pocket nappies other than prefolds with an inner cover to the wrap?

I'm still undecided, but feeling I should as some of my customers have been asking about them and I should try them so I can give an honest opinion. Not sure I will stock them though.

Montifer · 06/02/2010 22:50

Thanks Mumface, that;s really helpful.

It's the Fill Your Pants BOGOF that grabbed my attention

JennyPenny23 · 06/02/2010 22:56

I have got some, will post properly tomorrow but I really like them. Only downside is that you would need lots of inserts to make the system effective, and they are about £4 each I think. But the wrap is great. I forgot to change DD the other day (well, I thought DH did it and he thought I did it) and she litterally eneded up with a puddle but the wrap contained all of it and not a drop leaked anywhere (till I took it off!)

LackaDAISYcal · 06/02/2010 22:59

Everyone is doing a BOGOF at the minute montifer....not sure if it's worth shopping around for price?

tellyaddict · 06/02/2010 23:42

Yes, a disp pad is much better than a full disposable nappy in terms of landfill. .

Maybe I'm just a cynic, but why is such a new to market nappy on BOGOF already? Surely if it was great then they wouldn't need to flog it on offer........

Each to their own though, I do know a couple of people that love their prefolds (only a couple mind ). I'm a 2 parter fan, with a very tall, heavy wetting child I only use the best there is, and only sell the best there is to my customers too.

JennyPenny23 · 07/02/2010 00:00

I think the offer is probably just to get them "out there" so that they get the good reviews etc. Haven't seen a bad review yet - from anybody who has tried them.

I just wish the inserts were on BOGOF too!

mumface · 07/02/2010 08:55

I also only want the best for my baby tellyaddict, just cause it's BOGOF doesn't mean it's rubbish. Maybe you should try one, then advise your customers. I wouldn't comment on nappies I haven't tried.

LackaDAISYcal · 07/02/2010 15:20

I agree mumface. I was a prefold sceptic as you only ever hear bad things about them, but then I tested some for a parenting awards scheme last year and was actually pretty impressed with them. I think I'll get a couple of the flips to try....shame you don't appear to be able to mix and match the insert option on all the bogof offers...would be nice to have an organic and a stay dry!

tellyaddict · 08/02/2010 12:17

Of course you only want the best for your baby mumface, as we all do, and I agree BOGOF doesn't automatically mean rubbish either, but CAN often mean they are poor sellers and the supplier wants rid of excess stock quickly to make for something new or possibly better.

I think I may have to relent and try some for myself.... even though prefolds did not agree with my heavy wetter in the past! Encouraging though that there aren't any bad reviews out there so far.

Just beware though, that if you do have problems with BG nappies, they are, how can I put it, not the most helpful company to deal with from what I've heard from other nappy sellers.

Charlootle · 11/02/2010 10:22

I have 4 from the BOGOF and I like them. At first they leaked on my nearly 2 year old but then I poppered down to the medium setting and they were a much snugger fit around the leg. They're great value and the absorbency is good.

Montifer · 11/02/2010 21:02

Sounds good Charlootle, did you buy extra inserts?

OP posts:
Mammamia2 · 14/02/2010 11:59

I got some on bogof as I could not resist a bargain from the babame company. So far so good. I think they are really really slim, DH likes them and no leaks. I prefer the original bumgenius for ease of use but these are great back up and I would recommend them but would want more colours. Just gone back to babame to get their zinnia bumgenius on bogof!

I personally like the idea of the disposable inserts for holidays and just 'off' days. Not bought any as I could not find any in stock ones so cannot yet comment on what they work like, but I will definitely try them once they are available.

tellyaddict I can not see how they would be classed as a poor seller if they have just launched? I think they just want to get people to try them and get reviews like someone earlier said?

AddictedToCloth · 15/02/2010 10:08

Mammamia2 I got some on bogof for the same reason + I have to say they are brilliant!
I was really doubtful at the start so I just bought 1 stay dry (+ got 1 free!!!!) then I read up on some other forums about the organic - lots of people saying how absorbent it is, great for night time. I bought 2 organic to try and LOVE them!! So so so impressed I could sing from the roof tops.
Although I do still use them along with my BG's as I think they are a good complement for when I'm feeling a little lazy!

Things I've noticed:
the sizing is excellent- very trim and the poppers are a great idea because the velcro on my BGs have taken a little wear and tear

flip cover contains EVERYTHING! + I mean everything!

Insert actually 'flips' out really easily and goes in just as easy - so much less hassle than stuffing

organic insert is SOOOOO soft

Hope this helps!
Oh and just so you know - bumgenius offer a 1 year guarantee which I know from experience you get if you have faults with your nappy - some forums say the same guarantee is being applied to flip?
Does anyone know if this is true?

lucieerin · 18/02/2010 23:53

I love them personally xx

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 23/02/2010 21:19

I've been using the flips for just over a month - love them! not a single leak and even the MIL can work out what to do with them!

thebluefoxategreensocks · 24/02/2010 23:43

Never yet had a leak with the Flips yet, and must have had them for a month or so now! And I had never been able to use prefolds on my boys without ALL leaks. So they are very impressive. I think anyone who wanted to go for a cheap/prefolds system should definantly invest in some Flip outers. There's no need to have all the special/specific Flip inserts. I just use my own stash of pocket inserts (half a bamboo square pad folded, topped with a microfibre insert (fuzzis, cheap ebay, etc) and then a fleece/suedecloth liner on top, and my very heavy wetting nearly 3yo can wear it for ages with no leaks. They're amazing! In fact, I've had him wear the same outer for the whole day (12 hours) just changing the inserts every couple of hours, as I do with any other nappies for him, and the outer never had any damp transfer on it (something that never happend with Proraps, which were always said to be the best cover for prefolds). So yes, good value for money. You will end up with dirty outers if you have a soiled nappy - so that's something you'll need to expect, which might mean you'd need a lot more covers to use them for a small baby. But toddlers who don't do poos all day long could get buy with just a couple of covers, meaning a very cheap cloth option indeed!

thebluefoxategreensocks · 24/02/2010 23:45

Oh, the other big plus about them is the size! My nearly 3yo had just about outgrown the one-sized BG pockets - but he even has room for growing in the Flips! Though we'll hope he'll not need nappies for too much longer! lol

loumum3 · 25/02/2010 08:30

I have found these and several sites say they are BOGOF but when I get to the basket the discount isn't coming off ! Am I being even more stupid than usual ??!!

What sites did you find BOGOF that worked please ?

Habbibu · 25/02/2010 10:55

Have been using them as night nappies on 5 mo ds, and am very impressed - I use 2 inserts plus a thin fleece liner (he's a heavy wetter and poos for Scotland) and no leaks, plus nice dry skin in the morning.

taffidavies · 27/02/2010 14:21

I tested them for mother and baby last year and was no impressed. I liked the idea of the disposable pads for holidays, but they are so thin they onlt latsed an hour, if that, before they leaked. the reusable pads were not that absorbant either. the wraps i do like, and have just purchased two more to go with my tots bots stretchies (lovely)

try them now whilst on offer, but I was not impressed
