large cloth nappies affecting movement?

Hi
my DD is 10.5mths and not crawling, pulling herself or rolling regularly (tho she can)

She wears tots bots which are quite bulky. I've wondered whether the nappy is the reason for her not moving before but decided it was unlikely. Today nursery asked me same thing (not offended at all- glad they care about her development).

Anyone know if it could be the case? The nappies are quite bulky between the legs... could this stop her crawling?

Im not convinced at all....

Nnnnnnaaaah, I don;t reckon so though we were concerned as health visitor mentioned it at around 8 months as DD wasn;t rolling. She walked at 10 months.

I chatted with my Mum adn Grandma and they reminded me that kids were in massive nappies for generations before disposables.

May put her off crawling perhaps? But not walking.

Yippeee for real nappies!!!

DS was late in rolling & crawliing, but started walking at 11months and now at 19 you cannot stop him.

I think cloth is the best thing since sliced bread and am expecting DC2 in 4 weeks and have been looking at all the cute little nappies they get to wear and use again

Makes no difference at all apart from a softer landing!

DD2 was a slow starter as well. Is 18mo now and walks but still very wobbly. I thought it might be the cloth making her walk all wonky (legs appear to be going in a different direction to upper body/head) but it's actually worse in a disposable. I think the cloth stabilizes her hips. Doesn't stop her getting where she wants to go though!

The question is : do you actually want her crawling about and pulling stuff off your shelves just yet? It's a bit like atheletes going out running with weights - adds a bit of resistance makes them stronger in the end.

Ariela older babies who can't move get pretty pissed off and tend to shriek a lot. Would much rather have happy engine of destruction.

Too be honest i had always wondered the same thing! However was proved very wrong when Ds crawled at 8 months and walked at 12 months.

He walks with this legs quite wide apart at the moment regardless of his nappy so I don't think it makes any difference and is dependent on the development of the individual baby.

I was raised in Terry nappies and I walked at 10 months (- My poor mum!)

If you are really worried why don't you try either lots of nappy off time at home and see if it makes any difference to movement or get a few pocket. nappies, known to be slimmer between the legs and see if it makes any difference to her.

I wouldn't worry though give her a few months and i'm sure you'll be chasing her around tidying up her waves of destruction.

Nappy might slow them down by a few weeks but no more than that. My ds crawled at 6m and walked at 12m, and he was really small so nappy very bulky. DD is now over 6m and still not really rolling over. Same nappies. Just depends on the child imo

PotPourri · 23/02/2010 11:30

No way. They are bulkier, but they also act as a great cushion when they fall on their bottom! They do waddle more though, which I personally see as an advantage in the cuteness front!

peachybums · 25/02/2010 13:10

My DS wore disposables and he didnt start crawling until 12 mths then started walking at 17 mths. They are all different. DD wore reusables and she was crawling at 7mths walking at 13 tmhs. So she was faster!

DD was in cloth from 4 weeks old, crawled at 7 months, walked at 10.5 months. The extra padding of cloth definitely helped her walk as she had such a soft landing each time she fell!

Friend's baby born on same day as DD wears disposables and crawled at 13 months, walked at 16 months.

Just remember Linford Christie and Colin Jackson wore cloth nappies!
