Afternoon then peeps...
Been havin this convo the past few weeks with my family, my DS and my DP...
At what age is it acceptable to let ur DC go to school n home alone???
Few people said its ok now as he's 8 and will give him more responsibility. there are no major rds to cross but i wont let him yet (dispite him sayin he wants to do it..) Am i just bein overprotective???
i would feel to anxious not knowing he got in2 school safe and as far as comin home i know he'd be so happy bein able to alone but i am just terrified and would be clock watching till he walks thru the dorr.. do i wait longer??? help

year 6 for me, maybe summer term of year 5

but it's a 25 minute walk
and I'll always be behind her with 2 younger siblings

thanks
we are only 5 mins from the school but he'd have to go round the block crossing 1 small lane. i am thinking that its not worth the risk. i know hed go TO school fine as his friends are there but coming home... i'm not sure. a few parents have said if hes mature enough then to test him n just watch him but i'm bit overprotective

I think I'd let him go but use stealthy surveillance to check that he will be sensible and safe. This of course is easy for me to say, my dd will never be focussed enough. She is such a dolly daydream she barely makes it to the front door.

YR 5 is pretty normal at dcs primary. I know one parent who asked the school to phone if a their child didn't turn up and they were happy to do so.

Yr 5 is 9/10
Yr 6 11/12

bruffin · 02/02/2010 12:35

sorry YR is 10/11

Northumberlandlass · 02/02/2010 12:35

In our area (3 tier system), kids usually walk to school alone when they go to middle school so Yr5 for us (age 9).

The walk from our house to middle school is a half an hour walk, through the centre of the town, but there are lots of safe places to cross. Also DS will hopefully meet his pals on the way !

thanks very much
i may have a word with the school to see what their policies are

my DS is growing up so fast

i think i'll def be gettin him at least untill september then to be on the safe side.. if i had my way id be walkin him there and back everyday till hes 16 ha ha haha
but i know you gotta give them space to grow up. rather be overprotective than not bother then him gettin hurt.
