Hi,
I just got a load of bum genius and flip nappies. The bum genius come with two inserts a big one with a flappy bit and a smaller one. which liner do i use to begin with and how much do i need to fold the flap over, also is it meant to go in a different way depending on if its for a boy or girl? Am confused and have worried DP who insisted that we got reusables that were daddy proof!
Also washing before use, i have just done them at 60 with a bit of non bio is that ok?
Thanks

how old is your DC? i have 5mo DS and i use the big insert poppered to its smallest setting, with the double thickness bit at the front - for a girl it would be better to have that bit at the back.

i wash mine at 40 with a little bit of non bio, but do a rinse cycle first with no powder & it makes a huge difference to how clean they are at the end of it - i found that the poo doesn't really come out v well if you don't do the rinse first.

not sure about washing before use - i think i just put them through once at 40 with a tiny bit of detergent & did an extra rinse cycle at the end & they seem to be fine, but i'm sure someone who knows what you're actually supposed to do will be along soon

Try this website, it has a pdf that might help.

Sorry, managed to post before I'd finished!

I wash my Bumgenius at 40deg normally, with a non-bio though only about a half measure for a full load.

After washing and drying them I always reassemble them myself and then put them away in DD's room ready for use. That way DH never has to think about assembling them and how inserts should be etc, he just puts them on and takes them off IYSWIM.

Also, I always use a fleece liner to protect the nappy from the poop explosions! I buy cheap fleece blankets and then chop them up to make loads of cheap liners. That way the nappies stay fairly stain free and if a liner is stained beyond help I can chuck it out without feeling too bad about it.

I find the best way to wash my Bumgenius is to do a cold wash with a tiny bit of non bio powder and then a 40 or 60 degree wash with no powder.
I think if you don't cold wash or at least rinse first the hot water can 'cook' the wee and they don't smell clean.
I do a final rinse and spin too.

I think it is easy to get a detergent build up, you really don't need much powder at all. If you can see suds in the final rinse you are using too much.

No you are not being dim .... i only realised that i was supposed to use the thinner liner for newborns by looking on MN and we were 4 months down the line by then! I did prewash before use (as advised when we bought them at a baby show)and now wash at 40 with non bio. Sometimes the very very pooey ones stain (i shall try rinising as an earlier poster advises - never thought of that )but if you get those in the wash sooner rather than later that seems to help. Don't forget to fold the velcro tabs onto the little tab inside when washing like i did at first or they all get attached together and come out of the washer as one big bundle.
Generally though we've found them pretty good

I love my bumgenius nappies! We use all the inserts at once as DD is only 14 weeks but a VERY heavy wetter and I have to change her again and again if I don't. I think it might actually be more that she has skinny legs and if I don't use all the inserts so the nappy is quite full she just wees out of the leg holes!

Very good advice on here already about washing - I would reiterate how little detergent you actually use - about 1/4 of what you would normally use works for us. My Step-mother can't believe it and goes on and on about the bacteria in poo not getting killed if you don't soak them in a bucket of nappisan and then boil wash them with a ton of detergent but it's true and you will rapidly kill your nappies if you do that!

I also make them all up at once when they're dry so that when I'm changing her it's just like a disposible apart from whipping them apart and sticking them in the bucket lined with a net bag instead of the bin. Then when the bucket's full you can pull the bag out and stick it straight in the wash without sticking your hands in. Perfect.
