taking DS (5 months old) swimming for the first time on wednesday. i have an imse vimse swim nappy that i bought at an NCT sale but am wondering - does it just go on on its own, or do i need a liner or anything?

they go on alone - it wont absorb wee or anything is more a poo catcher.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 31/01/2010 20:31

Have never used a liner with a resusable swim nappy. Think swim nappies in generally are mainly there to hold in any code browns (or yellow in case of bf poo) whilst you get them to the side.

Thankfully I've never had a swim nappy put to the ultimate test...

Montifer · 31/01/2010 20:32

Not sure about the Imse Vimse ones but DS swims in Happy Nappy and they recommend use of a liner. Not strictly necessary but imagine it would make 'emptying' easier if required.

Thankfully we've never had to

wow, thanks for all the quick responses! the consensus seems to be no liner so i'll go with that (& prob not much good for bf baby poo anyway, now i think about it)

i'm a bit nervous about it - i'd be so if they had to drain the pool cos DS has done a 'code brown' & it leaked out of the nappy!

perhaps i'd better try it on him at the next nappy change & see how snugly it fits ...

going to start a new thread with another question now as you've all been so helpful

I have been using Floaties Aquanappies since I first took DS swimming at 7 weeks. I have had to put them to the ultimate test and they have performed very well! Now on my third size, I have been so impressed havn't wanted to change.

becksydee · 31/01/2010 21:42

hmm, DS just provided an opportunity for a nappy change so i tried him in the swim nappy - it's definitely snug but seems rather ... insubstantial. like baby speedos! not sure i'd be confident about them containing a poo.

time to go shopping, i think ...

will look up the floaties aquanappy, thanks for the recommendation bikerunski

I sell Floaties Aqanappies and everybody seems happy enough with them - it's what I always used on my 2 children.

But most babies don't poo in water. You'll probbaly know by now if your baby has ever pooed in the bath - if not then you'll probbaly be fine in a pool.

becksydee · 31/01/2010 23:41

nappyshedsal - he has done a poo in the bath before! rather annoyingly, i was in the bath with him at the time

I've been AWOL for a while, but I am a specialist babyswim teacher. IMO the very best swim nappy is the Popolini/Motherease one. Definitely get something which undoes to take off, and not pullups - they are a nightmare to remove, if put to the ultimate test! A liner is unnecessary - it will slip in the water inside the nappy anyway.
Contrary to popular belief, put about by the big babyswim school chains, who boost their profits by insisting on and selling neoprene covers, most pools DO NOT demand a double nappy system! I have yet to come across one which does, so ask at you local pool before stumping out! In any case, all swim nappies are double barriered anyway - and inside mesh and an outer cover.
They do not need to be hefty and bulky, and definitely do not need to be absorbent - just snug fitting around waist and leg. Anything absorbent will make your baby very unbalanced as soon as hos bottom os out of the water, as the weight will de-stabilize him.
Hope this helps!

PotPourri · 01/02/2010 12:34

I use the disposible ones - think they might be huggies. But I stick them in the washing machine afterwards. It will last as long as it fits, although have never had a poo in it, in which case I would probably bin that as I would tear the sides to get it off! Personally I prefer that even though I use reusable nappies and have tried the proper reusable swim naps.

They sell single ones at the desk in our pool

becksydee · 01/02/2010 15:11

oh dear littlepants, i fell for the hype on various websites and shelled out for a happy nappy ah well, the imse vimse swim nappy won't fit him for too much longer anyway, so needed to buy something in the next size up regardless, so it won't be a complete waste of money. didn't come across anywhere selling the ME/popolini swim nappy whilst i was searching last night but i'll have a look later, thanks for the recommendation

potpourri - one of the other mums i'll be going swimming with uses little swimmers so i'll see how they hold up! (although would prefer to use something reusable to be honest)

Yes like like little pants says a open out one is ideal if you have a water pooer - i learnt the hard way - after that i had been using a fuzzi bunz pocket without the insert - job done

emiliab · 02/11/2010 21:13

we've bought a couple of reusable swim nappies from funswimshop, the konfidence one or the splah about both worked well. most of the babies in our swim lesson had this style of swim nappy, seemed to work well :)

SummerHeightsHigh · 02/11/2010 23:31

With (PF) DD1 I shelled out for the various sizes in washable swim nappy but have now seen the light and DD2 wears a pocket nappy without the inserts like nappyzone said.
I wish I had know I could do that sooner. So much easier to get the wet nappy off than the neoprene types.

Cathandwazza · 08/03/2012 00:07

Most of the mums in our group use the lion in the Sun one, we got a whole stack of different styles in a sale: www.lioninthesun.com/productdetail.asp?productcatalogue=Aquanappy. But you have to get the size right in the legs. One mum (Caro you know who you are!) had a bit of a crisis with that style with the neoprene legs. Not nice.

Seona1973 · 29/03/2012 18:05

I used reusable swim nappies from mothercare although thankfully ds never ever pooed when we were in the pool
