Do all reusable nappies leave baby soaking around genitals?

Hi all, so LO arrived and I have a nice stock of muslins and wraps, diddy diapers (pockets), and everytime I try putting him in them he gets soaking wet. No leaks from wraps (which is more than I can say for the dispoables I've tried), but even with a fleece liner he ends up with soaking wet bits! I really don't want that amount of pee sitting next to his skin for even a minute. Is he just a really heavy wetter or do I need to use something else, different nappy type. Using reusables is really important to me and having to use disposables is heartbreaking. DS is a skinny lad so any suggestions on other nappy types needs to take this into consideration.

Thanks in advance.

Its not something I've ever experienced with our tots bots! DS is only ever wet on the rare ocassion his nappy is soaked through!

Have you tried the Little Lamb fleece liners? They were magic at wicking away the moisture from the skin.

We're also in Tots Bots (flexi tots) and DS is just fine in them . We've been using them for the past 9 months and still really like them (both of us ). We use spunlace liners on top to catch any solids (but since you have a newborn, you won't see these until weaning).

Have tots bots bamboozles with fleece liners for night, and ittis for day, and ds's skin is in great shape - I've been surprised. I do use a double layer of fleece at night, but then he's in it for ages.

If you're using a fleece liner then his skin should feel pretty dry. Even if you didn't use a fleece liner and he was sitting in a wet nappy it wouldn't matter. "In the olden days" we all wore terry squares which were soaked through next to our skin. It is not wee which causes nappy rash, but poo mixed with wee.
But with a fleece liner he should only really feel slightly damp at most. And if he was in a disposable he'd still be sitting in all that pee, just soaked into the gel.

DS is a real skinny minnie, We seem to have found a balance between small enough for him to wear with no leaks and big enough to hold the wee.

We have gone for Little lamb wraps with Tommee Tippee? prefolds but then I use cut and shaped no name fleece liners AND a paper liner (which you can put in the washing machine if they are not dirty.)
He has a lovely soft dry bottom.

Motherease stay dry liners - one way - try stockists or ebay

MilkNoSugarPlease · 30/01/2010 13:11

itti bitti delish liners are fab! and v absorbent

Just a pita they dont grow with the child! we use bum genius at work (am a nanny) and they are fab to!)

somewhathorrified · 30/01/2010 14:53

Thanks for all your suggestions. The thing that suprised me was that the fleece side of the nappy (next to skin) was indeed nearly dry, it was just that he wasn't . I'll try some of the suggestions you've made and see if any of that helps...fingers crossed.

"fleece liners AND a paper liner "

That is your mistake and why your baby is sitting in a puddle of wee. Having two lines is stopping the wee reaching the nappy. I suggst you have either fleece or the paper liner but not both.

Personally with a newborn I would go for fleece. Breastfeed poo is not as bad as you think to wash.

somewhathorrified · 31/01/2010 14:09

I only used a fleece liner and his genitals were literally dripping wet!

How often are you changing the nappies? A newborn will go through a lot of nappies.

The only other thing I can think of:.

Have you pre washed the nappies? New nappies are not absorbant and you may have to pre wash them at least twice to make them absorbant.

When you wash the nappies you need to make sure they are rinsed well to get all the detergent out? Too much detergent can reduce absorbancy.

Dear somewhathorrified,
Please do just pause a moment and think what your baby was floating about in for the past 9 months before his arrival, and what he was weeing and pooing in just before he arrived! He came out OK didn't he? Bet he has lovely skin. Of course it sounds horrific when you listen to the disposable adverts on TV extolling the virtues of an absoultely 'dry' skin - dried by a chemical on the surface of the nappy dispersing the wee into tiny droplets so that the gel can more quickly absorb, so I can understand your concern.

His skin being damp isn't actually 'bad' for him - after all we're told (by the advertisers of moisturising products) to chuck loads of moisturiser on ourselves, and chances are he'd not long ago had a wee before you changed him as he's so little, his own body heat and the fleece liner won't have dried his skin out yet.

I think on balance I'd prefer a 'physical' drying of his skin using his natural body heat, than a chemical one, wouldn't you?
