When did you stop using a baby monitor?

my DH and I often lie awake at night listening to the contented babbles of our 9 month old DD, when we could be asleep...DH wants to ditch the monitor, but I hate the thought of us only hearing her when she has built up to a full blown wail. Just wondering what others do/did? DC2 is due in the summer when our DD will be 15 months, so by then I'm hoping I'll have managed to wean myself off the monitor; the thought of listening to two monitors isn't very appealing!

I have no idea what others do, but my DS is 13 months and the thought hadn't crossed my mind!

I reckon we'll ditch the monitor when he's old enough to understand that we are just next door, and not get really upset when we don't come straight away. Or something.

Not yet, anyway.

Aw, how sweet. .

Er, we never used a baby monitor -- I reckoned if I had one I'd become a slave to it and I couldn't go there.

ToccataAndFudge · 28/01/2010 18:21

never used one upstairs when we were up there - well we did for a while with DS1, then realised that quite often a few small cries/bits of noise didn't actually mean we had to go running to him and that he had actually become quite good at getting himself back to sleep.

However - I (until last year when my 9yr old one died ) still used one to hear if any of the DS's (9,6 and 2) had woken up - as with the downstairs door shut there's no way I could hear them. (and if I left the door open couldn't have music/tv/etc on because the sound would travel upstairs). Also useful when they're playing upstairs together to make sure they're not killing each other

So I've been hunting for another monitor so I can once again relax in the evenings.

never used one here either. i am very good at running up the stairs 'cause i thought i heard something'

One day we just realised it had stop working, and also realised we had not being paying any attention to it for a long time. By then DS was so loud if in trouble that the monitor was redundant.

obviously it often depends on your house - if you need one or not for when you're downstairs - somehouses you'll hear them no problem without if they really need you.......others you won't

i used it till dd1 was 2 yrs old as if i was to get rid of it before age of 2, i wouldnt able to relax full stop. We live in a big house as well.

Still using it at 3years 8months.
When she goes quiet and stops singing / tapdancing / wittering, I know that she's gone to sleep.

Has also proved useful for the occasional puking in bed experience (her, not us!)

We usually turn the sound off when she falls asleep, then if any screaming / puking etc we will eventually spot the lights on the monitor.

Never had one in the first place. House is a 3 bed semi, not enormous, and my hearing is pretty good.

ToccataAndFudge · 28/01/2010 18:46

cory my house isn't massive either, and my hearing not bad either.

But if I close the door to listen to music (even quietly) there's no way of hearing if one of them wakes up and is crying.

Never bothered with ds2.

Used for a few weeks with ds1 but it was pointless. He was a screaming, non-sleeping baby and I could hear all that without need of a monitor.
