Is there an alternative name for godparents?

We've asked two of our friends to be godparents to our son, but we're not religious and not planning on getting DS baptised. We mean it in more of an honorary auntie and uncle way, i.e. that they have a hand in his unbringing - the traditional godparent job, just minus the religion! Does anyone know if there is a humanist version of the godparent, or another name we can use for it?

Ta!

There are alternatives but none of them are that great!

Supporting adults, friend parents and guiding stars were some of the ones we were recommended - we settled on mentors cos I think that sums up the role we want them to play .

HTH.

Friends of mine called us all Guardian Angels - deliberately camp, but equally rather lovely.

Mentor
Sponsor
God-free Parent

We settled on mentors but not very happily -- I kind of think it sounds like a role you would have at work. Guideparents is nice I think.

Guardian
Guide parent
Guide Aunty/Uncle

any good?

We looked into having a naming ceremony (we haven't ended up doing it) but they were called Guiding parents which I think is nice.
