Birthday present ideas for a one year old

Hello,

My DS is one in a few weeks and I need some ideas for his present - my creativity is a bit low so soon after Christmas!

He got lots of things for Christmas - like a wooden trolley walker, shape sorter etc. Something affordable and versatile would be great. I'd love to know what your children enjoyed around this age!

Many thanks

I have put money in their accounts for 1st birthdays

They don't know any different and get loads from other people

Buy a cheap token present as well if it makes you feel better

by far the best present (as far as he was concerned) that ds got when he was 1 was a Thomas the Tank engine helium balloon. it stayed inflated for about 3 weeks, he loved it.

mileage wise, probably the best present as far as i was concerned was a ride on fire engine, he still plays on it now (he's 4!) as do his friends when they come round.

i can't remember what we got him when he was one. not alot i dont think.

aqua draw was my best buy at that age, i always buy them now for 1st birthday presents!

My god-daughter got this for her 1st birthday. It is really sweet.

Just wanted to revive this question. My twins are going to be one next month. What's the best first birthday present?

stealthsquiggle · 14/05/2010 14:05

I think the answers stand - if you have room, get them a pair of wheelybugs - they may take a little while to grow into them but they will love them and they will last for years.

SignatureScent · 14/05/2010 14:18

Hmm - wheelybugs are a no go for us. There's six of us living in a flat. But know what you mean about the whole 'worthy' present thing.

My oldest love tat. Half an hour in Claire's is worth all the classic books put together as far as she's concerned.

stealthsquiggle · 14/05/2010 22:15

Yes I could see that way madness (and broken limbs) would lie.

BertieBotts · 14/05/2010 22:21

DS loves the ELC Whizz Down Mountain and it doesn't take up too much room. He got it for Christmas when he was 14 months old and still plays with it loads at 18 months. I never bothered putting batteries in it, it's perfectly functional without, and he doesn't know that it's supposed to make noise!

Oh... I see that it seems to have been discontinued Your local shop (ELC/Mothercare) might have some left, if not, check ebay?

Ebay search

These eggs

www.amazon.co.uk/Tomy-Hide-n-Squeak-Eggs/dp/B00068Q7LC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=toys&qid=1273 876999&sr=8-1

are one of the best, most played with toys in my childminding setting. DD1 had them for her first birthday 12 years ago, they have been played with almost every day since and still look brand new. I know they're a small present but well worth it.

This type of bike

www.amazon.co.uk/John-Crane-Toys-Pintoy-Trike/dp/B001LMKN80/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=kids &qid=1273877357&sr=1-2

Has also been a firm favourite. My 7 year old DD was riding ours yesterday! Our is Galt but it doesn't really matter what make it is.

TheNextMrsDepp · 15/05/2010 00:02

Just looked at my spreadsheet (yes, I'm sad ) to see what I gave my DCs for their 1st birthdays:
DS - Galt trike (fab, was ridden to the point of total disintegration)
DD1 - climbing frame (she was a bit advanced on the motor skills front, and, hey DS was pretty chuffed too)
DD2 - bath toy (we had every toy known to man by then, and at the age of 1 DCs have no idea about money - save your pennies until they're 10+; trust me they develop expensive tastes!)
