what age did you say goodbye to buggy?

Just curious. My 4 and a half yr old hasn't used his buggy for a few months. Know that people go on at the age of some kids still in buggies - so what age did your child say goodbye to their buggy? To walk him to school in the morning, I feel he still needs it as it's a good 30-40 min walk and he dawdles badly and we would always be late and stressed. Or what if you wanted to go a really long walk?

about 4.5 for DD1 and about 3.5 for DD2

DD1 is still really feeble whereas DD2 is full of beans

I also found it useful for phases when they were recovering from illnesses but I still wanted to get out - so I'd bung it in the attic until you are quite sure

Ds was 2.5. He weighed a tonne and I couldn't push him any more tbh. Also he was more than happy to walk and was quite good at staying close by and keeping up a reasonable pace. He is 3.5 now and can walk about 3 miles without whining. (better than I can say for myself)

Am pg with number 2 who no doubt will be in one till he/she is 12.

They are good for when the weather is dire and you need to get other dcs somewhere in a hurry and can't be faffed dawdling.

Oh and fwiw, I don't drive and walked everywhere with ds.

It's down to luck really.

The age your kid comes out a buggy is not important imo. Different lifestyles, different needs.

Just got shut of the double so dd now walks everywhere. She is 2.5

I'm having to prise DD (5 tomorrow!) out of the buggy. Our walk to Nursery is nearly two miles, and I mostly get DD and DS1 (3) to scoot or walk, but sometimes I have to take the buggy (for various reasons too boring to detail). DD likes to sit in it and DS1 rides on the back.

I have to admit that I allow it for an easy life. If we have the buggy, DD will drag her heels and whinge incessantly unless she can ride in it, and I really just can't bear the hassle. I am getting more strict though.

loads of judgey smuggery on here as usual.

We sacked the buggy off when dd was 3, could have done so before but I just didn't have the time to spend 45 mins doing a 10 minute journey so used it for my convenience. Such as to get to and event or and activity where dd would enjoy herself and run around without the agonisingly slow walk there.

ds was born just after dds 3rd birthday and i wasn't going to buy a double buggy so she's got used to walking, however I'd never judge anyone for using a buggy later than this, there could be all sorts of reasons. one may be TIME, we used to have a lot to do in a day sometimes and snail pace walking just didn't cut it.

She has a scooter now which is great.

v and at gorgimamas "chubby" comment.

I used mine until dd was about 4 because
I don't drive and it made a brilliant shopping basket. She walked most places, we just used it we were going shopping or visiting my mum over night with lots of bags etc

DS was just 2 when she was born so I used a double buggy for about a year,

I think a lot of the reason that children whinge and refuse to walk is because they have an option to go in the pushchair/be carried.

When my DD (3.5) walks back and forth to school, she knows she has no option. I can't carry her and push the pushchair up a steep hill. So she either walks or we don't go anywhere!

However, when DH and DD often walk to the local shop (same distance as school) DH regularly has to carry her home cos she claims she is tired! She has never once asked me to carry her home - cos she knows it wouldn't happen!

dd, 18 month when ds1 was born, i never had a double.

she used it one and off for a few months while i slinged ds1 but he was too heavy to sling past 5 months so she was completely out of the buggy at 2. she can tramp along at my speed for miles.

ds1, i was weaning him off it when he was 2-3, he hasn't used it since about 3 months before his third birthday. he's a slow walker though, drives me nuts!

ds2 is only 11 months but he rarely uses the buggy as i sling or carry alot.... i'll be encouraging him to walk from a similar age to dd as i don't think it dd ds1 any favours to be in the buggy so long.

TulipsInTheRain · 27/01/2010 10:22

oh, an i only learned to drive when pregnant with ds2.... so not driving them everywhere

BornToFolk · 27/01/2010 10:33

Horton, my dad likes to tell me (frequently ) how he was turfed out of the pram when his brother was born when he was 18 months old and then he had to walk the 2 miles into the village and 2 miles back again....kids these days don't know they're born, etc, etc, etc.

We'll still use the buggy for a while yet I think (DS is 2.3) He's a good walker but he does dawdle...I have no problem with using it to get him home from the park after an hour of running around.

What age can you use scooters from? That seems like it might be a good solution to the dawdling issue.

"The number of children in DD's nursery class (aged between 3.5 and 4.5yo) who just hop straight in the double buggy when they come out of school is unbelieveable. And I have never once heard any of these childrens mothers ask them if they would rather walk."

Er, a child that age who wants to walk will say so, and probably tantrum if not allowed to for that matter.

Scooters have been totally unreliable for us, just another heavy awkward thing for me to carry when child gets fed up/crashes off and sobs uncontrollably for many minutes/gets tired/whatever. Give me the buggy any day instead.

DS5yo had a high fever this morning and bad cough for last 3 days, so he went into the buggy to and from school morning and afternoon today (was pissing down frozen mist this afternoon, too). I challenge anyone to have a problem with it.
Mind, DS10yo expressed outrage at his brother's privileges today -- big DS would still go in the buggy if I let him! I think he stopped riding in there regularly at age 4.5yo.
