DS has just started school and is coming home starving - has a packed lunch and is eating all of that so putting it down to just working off lots of boundless energy.

Always have his tea ready so usually has it at 4pm, after has yoghart/fruit. Then is still hungry he says so has biscuits, crisps
fruit bar - humzinger etc... and it seems endless until bedtime.

Im conseous that this shouldnt be happening after such a decent tea/meal.

Cant delay his tea as he really is hungry when he comes in - but want to try and control this.

Was thinking of doubling his tea hoping he is full

I hate to tell you this, but Ds1 is alomst 12 and still wakens anytime between 5am and 6am! very very occasionally he will go to 7am!
Feeding him more hasn't helped either

Success tonight...changed routine and took your comments/advice on board.

3.30pm - home from school - snack of bread sticks and a smoothie

4.30pm - tea, wholemeal spagetti and bol. Yoghart for dessert

5.45pm - small piece of maltloaf

6pm - up to get ready for bed

I have made an area in the cupboard put a basket in and the fridge made an area with healthy snacks and explained to ds that this is his area and when home from school can have a snack and a drink, have tea a littel later then before bedtime if still a little hungry then he can choose again for super time.

Worked really well tonight.

glad you had a good night and it worked

thanks and for your suggestions. My trying not to duplicate foods in his lunchbox for foods as snacks at home so some more ideas would be great. He doesnt like milk or cheese btw! adores all fruits and vegs though

My dd also won't eat cheese or drink milk so we often have american pancakes for breakfast, and I make scones or oat cookies for snack. Lots of butter and milk in them. She will eat melted cheese for some reason, so the cheese toasties made in the machine are always a hit.

stirringbeast · 21/01/2010 13:28

I make the pancakes and serve them with banana and a little maple syrup - the ones you can buy are full of sugar. You can make the batter in a jug the night before and keep it in the fridge then in the morning it's really quick just to pour into a frying pan.

how about fruit salad mini pots, crossiants, fruit loaf, hot cross buns, chewy bars, box of raisins, flapjacks, breadsticks, rice cakes, pom bears, rice pudding pots.

dietqueen · 21/01/2010 13:33

DQ - my ds is 5 in April - so very similar age. We get up at 6.30ish, and he's normally 'down' at 6.30pm - he needs his sleep (so at least as much sleep as your ds!).

He has school dinners - almost always has the 'hot' option, although he sometimes opts for the vegetarian option. After school ds has a snack - banana, toast and something, a couple of biscuits etc. He has his supper at 5.15/5.30 and has 'proper' food - bolognaise, lamb or game stew, fish and veg, potato with tuna and sweetcorn and veg etc. He has an adult sized portion most nights. Provided he has made reasonable inroads into his main course, he normally has a pudding of yoghurt (we get the 500g pots which do perhaps 3 servings?) topped with a cereal of some sort, quite often porridge oats.

For snacks / lunches how about:

Cut up peppers / carrots / cucumber / courgette
Brazil nuts with raisins and seeds mixed up
Cream crackers with marmite / cream cheese
Fruit bars / flap jacks etc
Bananas
Tortilla crisps (flour tortillas baked until golden) & humous or just on their own.
Olives
Mixed nuts
Sandwiches
Hot plain pasta with olive oil & herbs
Potato fritters - mashed potato mixed with plain flour to make a soft dough then fried until golden.

I do 'fruit pots' for my two. I chop up apple/fruits etc... squeeze on lemon juice to stop it going brown. Given up giving them whole apples as they half eat them.

Peanut butter and jam sandwiches

potatoe Wedges with humous/tomatoe salsa

home made popped corn in the microwave, is always a hit with mine
