Teeth - do you keep them?

My friend, once the Tooth Fairy has been, flushes the teeth down the toilet. I was really surprised.

She was equally horrified that I keep my DDs' teeth. I do. I think I have all of them. Wrapped up safely in my bedside drawer. I think of them as treasures and every so often I take them out and look at them and remember their gappy smiles and how far we have come together.

So, are you a flusher or a hoarder?!!

A long time for me yet, DD is only 2. However I will DEFINATLY be keeping them as you have described. Its a must

Cyb · 16/01/2010 17:27

What exactly are you planning to do with all those teeth? Surely you have the real children in front of you, complete with teeth old and new??

Cyb · 16/01/2010 17:27

Do you keep their hair clippings too?

I once saw a woman with a broach made out of her Dc baby teeth, each to their own.

I did feel very possesive about the first teeth my Dd lost, after all the effort and time 'I' had spent growing them and cleaning them. Her adult teeth are hers alone and she is now responsible for keeping them for the next 60 yearrs.

LightShinesInTheDarkness · 16/01/2010 21:19

Cyb Yes, I do have quite a few locks of hair as well...

I have no idea why I hoard these things really. I've never really thought about it, but I suppose I just can't quite bring myself to throw away bits of their bodies!!

My mum kept all of our teeth - she still has an old perfume box full of them - there are 3 of us and I'm the youngest (36)

barbareebaahumbug · 16/01/2010 21:39

I imagine I will keep ds's when the time comes (he's only 14 months!)

When the time finally came a few weeks ago for the penny to drop about the tooth fairy (quickly followed by the truth about Santa) my 9 year old asked me where all the teeth were...I kept the first two but then got worried that she would find them so chucked them out as they were collected. She was fine but I think she would have liked to see them again!

coppit · 16/01/2010 21:47

I don't think I will keep them when my DC's teeth fall out. Maybe for a little while!

My parents kept mine in a watch box. We were burgled, burglar obv thought watch box would contain a nice watch. I would have loved to have seen his face when he opened it and got my teeth.

coppit

you just made me snort all over my laptop LOL! I kept my sons first 1, just seemed like a big deal at the time. Came in handy when another fell out and we lost it before it went under his pillow that night. I was able to fish out the old one and pretend I's found it under the sofa. One day we might find the original I suppose!

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 16/01/2010 22:04

I certainly don't think it's a strange thing to do, just a sentimental thing. DS is 16mths old and without a doubt I'll be keeping his lost teeth in a special little box for him as children are fascinated by this so as soon as he stops believing in the tooth fairy he can have them back. I've also kept his first lock of hair and the clip that was attached to his stump of umbilical cord. For some reason I can't bear to throw it. (It is clean)

5inthebed · 16/01/2010 22:07

DS1 (6) has lost two teeth so far, the first one he swallowed and the second one is sitting in a candle until I decide what to do with it.

SparklyJules · 16/01/2010 22:23

No teeth lost yet in this house (despite DD being nearly 6 and desperate to lose one), but my dad still has the first tooth that I lost and that of my brother - he's kept them in the little plastic pots you used to get camera film in.

LightShinesInTheDarkness · 16/01/2010 22:28

LadyintheRadiator - ROFL!
I suppose it does sound a bit odd!
What I mean is, occasionally if I am getting something out of the same drawer I will open the box.
I didn't mean I am sitting on the sofa watching 'Dancing on Ice' when I suddenly get an overwhelming desire to pull out my kids' teeth!

jalopy · 16/01/2010 22:28

Yes. I've kept all my children's teeth apart from one. He swallowed it.

LightShinesInTheDarkness · 16/01/2010 22:30

Oh dear, that came out all wrong!!

I had my DD 10 1st baby tooth drilled and put with a silver fairy charm on her bracelet. She loves that but a few friends are a bit horrified.[you have to drill them fresh or they shatter and you have to have a nice dentist.]

The others I keep hidden in a bottle of 'kalms' just so she can't find them whilst she's a semi believer-DH only ever swallowed one in the night by mistake,he won't make that error again!

Cyb · 17/01/2010 12:22

Surely better to take a lovely snap of your childs smiling face each time they lose/grow a tooth instead of having them rattling around in a drawer, ready for your kids to sort out when you pop off

scanty · 18/01/2010 22:54

Actually think it would be nice to find something like that if your mum or dad were gone and you were sorting out their stuff. My mum and died last year and my sister and I are waiting for my dad to say he is ready for us to sort out her things. Finding our old teeth and stuff would probably give is a much needed giggle.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 19/01/2010 07:23

I'm glad I'm not the only one who keeps their child's teeth. My dd has only lost 4 (at age 8.8) and they are all in a box in the cupboard. I am not sure what to do with them TBH, but can't stand the idea of getting rid of them. DH thinks I am macabre though.
