If you are doing a full-time arts/humanities PhD...

How many hours a week do you do? I am thinking seriously about applying for next year but would only have 3 or 4 days of childcare a week. Is that enough if I am super-motivated and prepared to do some reading in the evenings and at weekends? I also have quite a lot of research experience, have some academic publications under my belt already and write for my job so hope to be able to hit the ground running. Also the topic I am planning is very closely related to an area I have worked on for a few years now - I work in the cultural sector - and I have a lot of contacts for fieldwork etc.

I guess I am comparing myself to friends who did PhDs straight from undergrad degrees when they spent quite a lot of their time learning to write and research. But I may be deluding myself. Cold doses of realism more than welcome! If I waited until the following year, DD2 would be at school and I would have more (though shorter) days each week.

Mine was a humanities-science hybrid. Full time, I would say 3 days/week childcare is a minimum - 4 days is good. When dd started school, I still had 2 days after school with a childminder as I found having some long days suited my working style.

Good luck!

Thanks, Acionyx - am still v. much in two minds whether to go for it. But I am nearly 37 so probably shouldn't delay any longer if I'm ever going to do one...

Well I was older than you - but not sure if that is a plus or minus!

thought i'd jump in here as i started mine at 39 so wouldnt let age hold you back. still not finished though but at least a complete first draft is in sight so the end is just over the horizon!

Thanks, sunsplash - am still mulling it over. Have to finalise my application by the end of the month if I'm going to go for it. I had a chat with a potential supervisor last week and was left really enthused about my topic but slightly daunted by the practicalities. I'm sure you're right - I know the age thing is probably a distraction. Good luck with your writing up.
