Excellent - tell me what I need!

TheNattyPlus3 · 12/01/2010 11:22

first you need to decide what pattern to use, im off out to pick up thomas from pre-school, but u can google it, or check cnt there are some on there (theres also a knit along but they are pretty far into it!)

will list some links when i get back

oh and daisy i think we will need your input on here, esp when we get to short rows

Think I might have a go too! Maybe I should start with a little scarf or something before I go for the longies!
Is it possible to teach yourself to knit?

Yes - def a scarf for ernie first!!! I could knit when I was little - how difficult can it be??!!

cherrytom · 12/01/2010 11:55

ooooo I might join in- have only ever knitted scarves though are longies fairly easy?

mumface · 12/01/2010 11:57

Yes I was also taught as a child and made a dolly scarf, but my mind is blank now, hopefully it's like learning to ride a bike!

Babybots · 12/01/2010 12:12

Yes scarf sounds good! Patterns has scared me off straight away! and im a leftie no one could even teach me when i was younger! I used to do french knitting but that only gave me long tubular bits that i could do nothing with except dolls scarfs! lol

Can you teach the unteachable???

TheNattyPlus3 · 12/01/2010 12:26

ah ok so basics basics

scarf it is then

you need a set of needles, some wool and youtube.

id go for a size 5mm needle and some aran wool so it knits up pretty easy, and quick

right here for basics:

although to 'cast on' (your starting stitches) i find this easier then the shown method myself:

any questions im here to help

cherrytom, once you have mastered knitting on the straight needles, its pretty easy to switch to the round. (using circular needles) which is what u need for longies.
we will progress to that pretty rapidly i would think for now u can just read along?

dont be scared off other knitters.. its not as hard as it sounds i promise. anything u get stuck on there is always youtube, another knitter or books to help you

lol Thats great Thanks!!! i'll get myself some needles when im at mums tomorrow and join in!

cherrytom · 12/01/2010 22:55

Ok Natty I'll keep checking in and join in when you start on the longies

octothechildherder · 12/01/2010 23:16

what needles and wool do I need?

Flibbertyjibbet · 12/01/2010 23:36

Oh! From the name of the thread I thought you were knitting woollen nappy covers like I did for my ds's.

(I've been knitting for donkeys years so don't need the scarf knit a long but will save the youtube link for everytime someone asks me to show them how to knit!!)

NB ladies when you buy wool it will show the recommended needle size on the ball band.

You can all join Ravelry.com its fab for ideas, and there are forums where you can ask for help if anyone gets stuck.

TheNattyPlus3 · 13/01/2010 10:37

Flibbertyjibbet - we are but some of the ladies need a week to learn the basics first any input from you would be more then welcome!

octo - when you get ur wool it should say on the band, but most of the aran wool i have says size 5mm needles. get whatever u can get locally as ur just learning and the tension (which is why u need diff sized needles) isnt really important. i think argos do a kids learn to kint set, which would do you all to practice ;)

when we get started on the longies you will need a particular type of wool and size of needle, but not to worry i will tell you exactly what u will need
