3 month old with exploding nappies - any tips?

My DS is 13 weeks and I cannot find a nappy to fit him. Every time he poos it all escapes - even a small one so I think it must be fart propelled!

I have tried my Minki reusables from DD and swallowed my principles and tried disposables but nothing seems to work. Size 2 it goes up the back and size 3 it comes out the legs.

Anyone got any suggestions? Or failing that a good way to remove the yellow stains from the borrowed clothes...

My ds2 is 5.5 months and still nearly every poo comes out of the legs. I use Asda or Morrisons own nappies so thinking about upgrading to huggies or pampers but I bet they are exactly the same.

Sandys with an airflow wrap - nothing ever escaped those for me - I think it's as they are elasticated top and leg

I had this problem for a while with DD. Not sure how she shot it up her back so often.

My only tip - make sure you carry a large plastic bag in your nappy bag as well as a change of clothes, so you have somewhere to store stinky clothes when out and about. Bin liners are ideal as they don't come with small holes punched in them (unlike supermarket bags which a v. holey and let the smell escape).

When you wean poo will become much more solid and easier to cope with (and smellier) - but in the meantime I'm afraid I have no solutions.

Have you tried different brands of disposable? Reusables a bit more expensive to try different types I know.

To remove baby poo stains, wash them in bio powder then put outside on a washing line (or over a chair, wall, anything) for a few hours (or overnight) - even if it's raining, cloudy, snowing or dark, something about the fresh air and sunlight bleaches the stains out. Then you can bring them in to dry because they won't get very dry out there at the moment! And/or re-wash in non bio if your LO has sensitive skin.

This works for all weaning food related stains as well except banana!

A tip I got from my sister - put a reusable wrap (like motherease airflow) over the top of a disposable) it has saved us on countless plane/car journeys

motherease airflow wrap over anything!

Thanks everyone, I hadn't thought of bio washing powder (doh!)

Think I'm going to try and persevere with the Minkis, they do seem better than disposables and I'll just have to get used to the washing machine being on all the time.

The sunlight exposure is more important than the washing powder. But the powder does help - especially with smells.

OK day 1 of washables hasn't gone well - hadn't factored in the inquisitive toddler problem when trying to nappy change and rinse them....

We went through a similar stage at about 3 months. I found the lollipop rainbow fleece were quite good but still not infallible. And definitely use a wrap over disposables. It may not prevent leakage entirely but it does give you an extra couple of minutes to get to a changing mat!

It was just a stage though, not sure whether it was diet or general chubbiness or wot but has not been a problem (fingers crossed) since about 5 months onwards. My son's legs did seem to get fatter and he fitted the legholes better, that could have been what solved it. Good luck!

vanish also useful for persistent stains

tryingtoleave · 13/01/2010 10:51

Maybe look at your diet? DD had exploding poos and the GP suggested I cut down on dairy but I found it was actually fruit that caused it.

PMSL at the image of Grumpla's DS acting as some kind of human poo cork.

My DD2 had this for a while only really stopped when she started weaning. She even managed to get it on her neck and under her arm on occasions (I think when she first woke up after sleep). I cant remember DD1 doing this and they were both bottle fed from about 3 weeks and both wore Pampers/Huggies.

I used reusables, DD1,s nappies would be swimmming but contained with terry nappies folded into kite and motherease ricki nappies which rubbed later so I switched to Nature babies wraps (Excellent wraps)

Henrietta · 16/01/2010 21:20

Ps soaking the nappies in water (plus I just used to use 1 tablespoon white vinegar as disinfectant) helps to stop stains from setting in reusables but a bit more messy to deal with when comes to loading in machine (though you can get mesh bags for nappy bucket to help). Also clothes that are already stained wet and put a bit of washing powder directly on stained bit before putting in washing machine helps - sometimes comes out after a few washes anyway.

I tried the airflow but my kids are all long and slim so I just found the nappy inside used to come apart a bit which didn't help with containment. The Nature Babies has poppers which make them quite a snug fit and you can wear them over most reusables as the rise is quite high and covers from waist to thigh well. (come in lovely colours too)
