big beg or cot?

My eldest boy has just turned 3, my baby 8 months old. We seem to have dropped the ball a bit with regards getting the bigger one onto various next stages (eg only just tackling potty training now and it's not going that well). Should I put him into a big bed or keep him in his cot? He's happy in his cot and sleeps like a trooper, but I wonder if his beligerant behaviour and general contrariness about EVERYTHING is because we haven't helped him become more independent in general eg getting him dressed and out of the house is like the battle of Waterloo.
When did yours go into big beds and was it a nightmare of night wandering?

We moved our 2.2 DS to a big bed just before Christmas. This was prompted by him making a bid for freedom the night before and falling out of the cot. Amongst my friends this has been the primary reason for moving to a bed.

DS fell out for the first two nights (luckily onto a stretegically placed pillow) which quickly taught him to stay put. He has a stair gate on his door in case of night wandering as he can't manage going downstairs on his own yet. It hasn't happened yet but I expect that night wandering could be an issue that will need to be tackled at some point.

Good luck.

One thing at a time.
If you are getting somewhere with the potty, then definately don't try to change his sleeping arrangements now.
By firstborn was 3y 4mths when he finally was potty trained and he continues to wear a nappy to sleep in. On the other hand he moved into the big bed of his own accord before he was two.

DS1 comes and joins us in our bed at some stage during the night more or less all the time these days. We don't mind. We get a good stretch on our own and have the room to ourselves at the beginning of the night.

We have a bed guard on his single bed that keeps him from falling out, but I don't know whether that is still necessary. He is 3y 7mths.
