I've got 16 terries from my Mum (they were mine so have done sterling service). Do I need more ?
Also is it a good idea to take disposables to the birth unit - I've got a packet I had to buy for the free pampers kit; not sure if I will be able to cope for the first week at home with the washing etc - or should I just go straight in at the deep end ?

I think you might just cope with that many if you washed every day but would get a few more to cut yourself some slack. How about a couple of shaped nappies for ease of use out and about. I think it's a good idea to use disposables in the hospital, but would see how you feel after the birth about which to use, you may feel up to the washing you may not.

Agree with mumface, a few more to take the pressure off, 20-24 is ideal. Disposables for the birth unit is a good idea also unless you are against it and/or have a partner that will take your nappies home for washing if you stay in.

In terms of when to start using you terries, that depends entirely on you and how you feel after the birth. I recommend Mums use disposables for 2 weeks and then go for it, but I do have some customers that have 'gone for it' the minute they get homes, so it's personal choice. The washing will need done anyway, and you can do a cold rinse on your nappies and the add your other (white) laundry, just leave out fabric conditioner.

It boils down to your mindset on washable nappies, you may feel nappy washing will be too much to cope with, or find it easier to wash nappies than trundle off the supermarket to keep buying more (especially if you have snow lol!!). I find the latter much, much easier, but that's me . Good on you for going cloth!

and yes definitely take paper ones to hospital/birth unit, esp if you have some already
you do NOT want to drag meconiumy terries home and have your first job home with the new baby to be scraping and loading...

with meconium/poo in mind - do remember to get biodegradable, flushable liners and lay them flat out on the nappy once foleded into shape (tuck in stray bits after nappy and wrap is on!).... avoid any scraping!

Good luck with your impending birth, may it be quick (but not too quick!) and relatively pain free!

Good luck with the birth

Terries are brilliant. Especially if you use a nappi nippa to fasten then and a good quality wrap. You might want to supplement your terry collection as 16 nappies is marginal for a newborn.

Personally I would use disposibles for the first 5 days.

Hello! I'm a newb- my first message on mumsnet! I'm a reusable user with a 4 month old. Just wanted to say that I decided, in spite of dire warnings from everyone, to try out my nice nappies from day one. I ended up not having a problem and would do it again probably.

I had a trial newborn sized Mothercare Smart Nappy which has a fab little cutout for the bellybutton so that was the first one we used. It was incredibly simple to use (it's a cradle style nappy) when hubby put baby's nappy on in the labour room. He was happy!

I had a bumgenius nappy sack with some lavendar oil on a napkin in it for my stay (3 days). The nurse said it was the best smelling nappy bag she'd ever come across! Brills, thought I.

We switched quickly to the Tommee Tippee cotton bottoms (which we had a stack of) and hubby took them home to throw in the machine with instructions (i.e. keep it simple- flush the liner; throw the nappies in a hot wash) when the sack was full. We never had meconium stains so he did a good job!

When we got home he was the "gatekeeper" so that included shoving nappies in the wash every other day- not exactly onerous, so he, again, was happy.

Um, that's it. We found it to be fine, and it really helped when mum-in-law was over and soaked them in a bucket with napisan (some would say not to- fair enough- but I love it) between washes, so I've stuck with her method. Still love the cotton bottoms more than any others, but the baby has outgrown them and we were bought a load of bambineo's and one life's, so that's what we use now.

Hope it goes well and you haven't gone into labour in the time it took to read this very long post! Apologies!

hello anenthusiast and welcome to mumsnet!

OP - you'll be fine with terries - maybe top up with some all in ones or pockets to make things easier sometimes.

You can use from birth in hosp - depends how long you stay in for - with ds1 I was in for 6 days with ds3 2 hours!

Come and join us on that chat thread
