When did you start taking your newborn out into the world?

My son is coming up to 2 weeks old. We have stayed pretty close to home as we have moved to a new country so know very few people to visit/have come visit. I was just wondering when you started taking your baby to public places like cafes/ art galleries/ shops?

The nurses and doc encouraged us to minimise risk-ie avoid shopping malls when they are busy and avoid altogether if possible( they didi not say for how long but i know it takes 12 weeks to build up some immunity)because of the flu virus. ANyway just seeking advice really on what others have done- we have played it safe so far but the cabin fever is creeping in and just wondered how quickly others exposed their newbie to the world out there?

thanks

took him shopping at 13 days old IIRC. Christmas day was 3 weeks after he was born, so that was it really

tassisssss · 02/01/2010 15:50

ds and dd1 were both born on Fridays and went to church on the Sunday as first trip.

dd2 was born on a Thursday 11pm and went out for lunch on the Sat...we'd been home since the early hours of the Friday and my parents had taken the older 2 out. we were all dressed and had nothing to do, so we popped out for an hour with our lovely newborn.

didn't really occur to me not to get out and about for my own sanity if nothing else, but that was before swine flu so wouldn't like to contradict your medics!

Number One - local shops at three days old. It was bloomin' freezing and I regretted it. Took her for a curry at about two weeks old.

DD2 - up and about within a day or two. Walked to town (2 miles) when about a week old.

I had been in and out of hospital though, so was desperate to just DO something!

If you feel like going out then go out. Nothing worse than being cooped up. I started taking out dd for a short walk after a few days. I think we went shopping after a couple of weeks. Good luck and enjoy your little one.

4andnotout · 02/01/2010 15:58

DD4 was born at 23.25 and i took her to school the fllowing day in the pram to pick her sisters up at 3.20

As soon as you feel up to it really

muggglewump · 02/01/2010 15:58

Shopping at 4 days, lunch the day after that and then just carried on with life really. Exdp worked away and my Dad wasn't really up to helping as he was 77 and had just lost my Mum to cancer a month before DD was born.

missslc · 02/01/2010 16:06

thanks- so will get him in a wrap and hit the flea market on sunday- i had a c section so have not been so mobile. we have been out but i have stayed in the car whilst hubby shopped as we live in a hse with 37 steps up to it and could not face taking pram down as i hve been using it to sooth him- it will go down to live in garage below once we take it down never to come up to the house again!

this has acted as a deterrent but i need some exercise and fresh air after 9 days housebound!!

4 days. We had people coming for dinner so on the way home from the hospital swung by the supermarket.

DS was an extraordinarily easy baby so we pretty much got to carry on with life pre-baby. Just chucked him in the sling.

WidowWadman · 02/01/2010 16:26

As soon as we were out of hospital, which was 2 days after the caesarean. Why wait?

Trafficcone · 02/01/2010 16:33

The day I came out of hopital, with
DS1, day 5
DD, day 2
DS, day 1. He was born at midnight and I was doing the school run by 3:15pm

CarmenTinselPalmTreesSanDiego · 02/01/2010 16:40

I took DD2 to the shop on the way home from the hospital, 6 hours after she was born. No reason why not really. Don't really buy this 'building up their immunity' - they should already have plenty of immunity from you, especially if they're breastfeeding.

That said, I would avoid huge crowds for the first couple of weeks for several reasons.

TrinityReindeer · 02/01/2010 16:42

the next day for school run

TheMysticMasseuse · 02/01/2010 16:54

its a bit of a cultural thing so wonder where you live? in italy where i am from newborns and their mums seem to stay cooped up forever. i would go crazy. in the uk, out and about as soon as you feel up to it.

for me it was about 10 days with dd1, but it was freezing and i felt rubbish and i had my mum to help me with everything incl shopping etc. with dd2, 2 days.

PoppyIsApain · 02/01/2010 17:01

Ds 5 days and that was just because i was stuck in hospital
To be fair though that was summer 2008 so no flu worries

ln1981 · 02/01/2010 19:38

ds1 was 3 days old, dd was 4 days old and ds2 was 3days old. i like to be up and about, cant stand being confined to the house if i dont need to be.

NorkyButNice · 02/01/2010 19:53

DH took DS for a walk down to the train station at 6 days to meet a friend who was visiting.

I was stuck at home flat on my back after problems with my epidural (not fun).

I think we all went out for lunch a few days later.

callmeovercautious · 02/01/2010 19:59

DD was out for an evening stroll at 36hrs. I had come home 24 hrs after having her and couldn't wait to push her in her pram

It was Sept 06 though and really warm, it was a great time to have a Newborn - not too hot and still not too cold we had to smother her in blankets.

Plumm · 02/01/2010 20:03

Wow to all of you doing the school run the next day - I could barely walk for a week after the birth!

That said DH took her for a walk on day 2 and we just carried on as normal from then.

Bambinoloveseggbirds · 02/01/2010 20:04

We took DS for a walk in the park when he was about 10 days old. We'd have done it sooner had I not been in hospital for a week after he was born. A walk will be good for your CS recovery too - a daily walk really helped with mine.

EdgarAleNPie · 02/01/2010 20:05

stayed in with Dd but more due to having stitchs in my fanjo...

DS went out the next day. i get miserable when i don't get walked.

Weeteeny · 02/01/2010 20:06

We went to Ikea the day after DS2 was born, then to F&B's for lunch. I regret Ikea as too much walking for me after second 3rd degree tear. But lunch was nice, and ds2 was much admired, lol.I was desperate to get house sorted etc, so hence Ikea trip.
After DS1 i was kept in hospital needlessly for a week so was trying to prove a point I think, very daft of me. I was knackered a few days later.
Take it easy for as long as you can, but if there are thing s you would like to do like a wee walk with the pram etc go ahead at your own pace.

oranges · 02/01/2010 20:08

ikea a day after giving birth????
