OMG.... My 4 month old was munching on a wrapping paper...

as I was wrapping the presents he got a piece of paper and was munching on it for about 10 minutes... Got a piece of paper from his mouth- was stuck to the palate...
I am shaking now. How could I let this happen?.. Where on earth were my eyes?...

He seems to be fine now, thank god almighty he did not choke on it. But I am woried sick - can the paint from the paper do any damage to him? What if he has swallowed a small piece?.. Will it just come out from the other end with no harm?... I tend to think he hasn't swallowed any and want to believe that after playing with the paper for a minute or so he dropped it as I found it near his head but can't be absolutely sure. Can such a small baby actually swallow paper, all that's been into his mouth till now was breat milk only, would he physically be able to swallow the paper?...

Please please if anyone has any suggestions of what I should do - please talk to me...

Don't worry, and keep the paper away from her. (And brace yourself for the time she starts removing and eating the wall paper, mine did)

Mongolia · 22/12/2009 10:57

This is a wind up, isnt it? ;)

misdee · 22/12/2009 10:57

dont worry

around this age dd3 ate some newspaper and part of a cardboard box. she is fine, but her food preferences have moved on a lot since then

Don't worry, DS has eaten paper and yesterday caught him munching on a piece of ribbon! My friends DS swallowed a button once, it came out the next day in his poo!

Weegle · 22/12/2009 10:58

honestly, don't worry he will be fine

you wait till he's showing all manner of strange things in his mouth - if he's swallowed some paper it will just turn up the other end and won't cause him any harm

Poledra · 22/12/2009 10:58

Deep breaths, stop panicking!

He'll be fine, any that went in, will exit from the other end. Though actually, I doubt he's swallowed any, he's just been playing with it. You would have heard him if he'd choked, he was right there with you.

These things happen

LibrasBiscuitsOfFortune · 22/12/2009 10:59

Deffo take him to A&E.

TrippleBerryFairy · 22/12/2009 10:59

no, Mongolia, it isn't I swear.

We need a straight face smiley...

Yesterday I caught my 17month old eating a quality street - with foil and wrapping still on. Got about 1/2 thru, which is quite impressive, before I removed it

darcymum · 22/12/2009 11:03

Mine love eating paper, my 15 month old even ate a staple the other day I took her to A&E and was just waved away by the doctor who said "well never mind".

Stop worrying its fine, I'm guessing he's your first.

jellybeans · 22/12/2009 11:03

Has happened to me a few times. If you can't see any in the mouth and he isn't gagging/choking, and checking the wrap sheet, all bits match up, he should be OK. I would give a drink to wash down in case. No harm in checking with the doc if you are worried though.

Mongolia · 22/12/2009 11:03

Do you remember all the things you or your friends swallowed by accident when we were young? I do remember a friend swallowing a 2p coin (can't imagine how) and seeing the very fascinating radiograph of one of my classmates displaying a one inch screw right below the sternum. They were fine, and as predicted, they passed them out within a few days.

LastOfTheMulledWine · 22/12/2009 11:08

It's fine!

When dd was the same age, we drove to the other side of the country to visit another MNer. DD was getting crotchety and I'd handed her the paper insert from a CD (shiny embossed paper) to play with. DH and I were having an argument about whether we were slightly lost or utterly lost and didn't notice dd eating a sizeable portion of the paper.

It came out in her nappy the next day and you could still read the copyright info on it.

She was exclusively bfed too. She was just fine.

darcymum · 22/12/2009 11:10

I put a button up my nose when I was a child, I never told anyone and it was never seen again. I have always suffered with snot nose, do you think it could still be there?

TrippleBerryFairy · 22/12/2009 11:10

my first darcymum, you're right.
Impossible to check the paper for matching bits as it is all ripped or wet.
Feeling a bit better now, I wouldn't worry if he wasn't so small...

It's normal to worry, especially with your first. When it happened to dd, I did flap a bit, but thankfully the MNer I was visiting has 7 children and just laughed. It was the appropriate reaction.

It will just pass straight through and cause no harm whatsoever. Give it a couple of months and you'll need eyes in the back of your head as he hoovers the carpet with his tongue/licks the cat/sucks the bin...

Mongolia · 22/12/2009 11:25

or eats the soil from the plant pots.

Have you calmed down enough that we can start making early weaning jokes?

TrippleBerryFairy · 22/12/2009 11:32

ok... I figured it won't do any harm if I call NHS Direct so I called them. Had to to put my mind to rest. Nothing to worry, just as most of you said.

Not looking forward to him eating the soil and licking the cat though..

giraffespullthesleigh · 22/12/2009 11:32

wrapping paper will be the first of many things

TrippleBerryFairy · 22/12/2009 11:33

and my MIL will be pleased to hear I have started weaning him

Bless, it is all part of baby's first Christmas, the preference of the wrapping paper and boxes over the fancy shiny new presents.

I had a friend who bit into an apple, dislodged a really wobbly tooth, took a deep breath to tell her mum and inhaled the tooth. That one did need a trip to A&E as it went down the windpipe. The XRays were cool though.

MrFibble · 22/12/2009 11:41

My niece ate a bauble... She was 1 yr old at the time. She is now 17.

Don't worry!

ReindeerInaSkoda · 22/12/2009 11:44

My 10 mo ate half a packet of Silk Cut. I took him to A&E. They were for the most
part (understandably) supremely judgey.

Of course when we got home I found the fags tht I thought he'd eaten, posted by him down a little gap behind the kitchen table.

I very much doubt that a teensy bit of wrapping paper is much to worry about.

nickymorris · 22/12/2009 11:45

My DS ate a large proportion of a book mark at about 4m - came out the next day with a few interesting faces (and feces - sorry!). Unless you've given him paper with lead paint on it and he's eaten a LOT of it then it's just one of those things that happen which mothers keep quiet about and never mention in Real Life.
