What sort of duvet?

Hi

Can't seem to find any information about this!! My son is 2 on Wednesday, and is still sleeping in a cotbed and I use a sleeping bag. He has a quilt (one of the mothercare ones) when he has his naps, but I now want to get a duvet for him. Is it ok to use a normal single bed duvet? What tog should it be? His grobag is only 4 tog and I don't think its warm enough.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Bumping for you as I'm not sure about a 4 tog duvet in the current freeze either

PS happy birthday to your little one - just a bit older than mine

DD was using a 7.5 tog single quilt at this age - she had a cotbed too, and I folded half the length under the mattress so it didn't overwhelm her.

the maximum tog recommended for cotbeds is 4/4.5tog. I have never seen higher than a 2.5/3tog grobag before so are you sure his is 4tog? The maximum recommended tog for a full size single is 10/10.5tog.

I would try a 4.5tog duvet and if he still doesnt seem warm enough try one somewhere between 4.5 and 10.5tog. You would get use out of the 4.5tog one anyway when it is warmer.

p.s. the bumpto3 website says this about duvet togs:

Why is the tog rating of the cot bed size duvet different to the tog rating of the single bed size duvet?

Because the size of the cot bed is smaller it automatically retains more heat when the child is sleeping, however, the larger surface area in a single bed means the child only heats the area he/she is sleeping in, therefore, a higher tog rating is required on the single bed size. The single bed size comprises of 2 x 4 tog duvets that popper together giving flexibility to reduce the tog to 4 togs when the nighttime temperatures increase.

Do not exceed the maximum recommended tog duvet, which is 4 tog for children in cots or cot beds and 10 tog for children in single beds

My DS (now 3) had a 4 tog one which was fine until the weather got cold so he now has a warmer one (think 10). I think 10 would be too warm for most of the year though.

It does depend how the temperature varies in your DS's room. In the end we shifted the thermostat into DD's room as she just won't sleep if the room is cold (regardless of how bundled up she is) - in consequence her room never gets below about 18/19 degrees at floor level and she's quite comfortable under a 4 Tog single duvet on a single bed (she's either in a a mid-sleeve nightie or long PJs).

We did get her a NICE duvet, though - I just never find cheap duvets are as comfy or as warm as more expensive ones, regardless of whether they have the same tog rating or not.

This has been a very helpful thread. I am about to buy something for my dd who is approaching 2 and about to move into a cotbed from a cot.

How does one choose btw duvet and quilt though? never used quilt myself (i come from a country where we only had blankets when i was growing up, wrapped in a cover, like a duvet cover). Quilts look very pretty but like i said no idea how they feel. where does one look for pretty duvet covers (the quilts i was referring to are M&P ones, they dont do duvets or covers)? Did not like john lewis or mothercare very much.
