English tuaght in Spanish Schools

I am conducting some researching into the English language being taught in Spanish nursery and primary schools and was wondering if some native Spanish Mumsnetters could help answering some of these questions:

  1. Does the Spanish national curriculam state that English must be taught?
  1. Is English taught in nursery or primary schools?
  1. If so from what age would a Spanish child start to learn English?
  1. How is it currently being taught...from English Resources? By a Spanish Teacher or a Specialist English Teacher?
  1. If English is not taught in schools how do parents enable their children to learn the language...are there such things as after school clubs
  1. Do the local education authorities have any say so?

Hope you can help, many thanks!

I have no idea but most Spanish people I know who speak English well, either attended a bilingual school (private) or took classes with a tutor.

It seems like the Escuela Oficial de Idiomas plays a very important role on this though that is aimed to adults, so not really answering your question here. Sorry

Hello,

Although we live in Spain, my dd is only 20 months old, so I don?t know much about this yet. What I do know for sure is that Spanish children have English classes in their first year at school. They can start state school at 3 and most do, though they don?t legally have to start until they are 5. Parents who have the money send their children to private language schools to have English classes in the evenings after school, typically for a couple of hours twice a week, from the age of around 5. Don?t know about your other questions?

Sorry I meant to say that Spanish kids have English classes FROM their first year of state school. I know of many 3 year olds having English classes and they love to show it off to us in the park
